Halls of Residence

Creating better places to live, learn and belong

IIT Kanpur’s residential campus is central to the student experience. Halls of Residence are not simply places where students stay; they are where friendships are formed, ideas are exchanged, communities are built and much of campus life unfolds beyond the classroom.

To support a growing student population, IIT Kanpur is expanding its residential infrastructure through four new Halls of Residence: Hall 15 for women students, and Halls 16, 17 and 18 for men students.

These new air-conditioned residences are being planned as modern, comfortable and sustainable living environments that can support academic focus, personal well-being and a strong sense of belonging.

Supporting a growing  student community

As IIT Kanpur expands its academic programmes and student intake, residential capacity must grow alongside it.

High-quality on-campus housing allows students to remain fully engaged with the life of the Institute. It reduces daily logistical pressures, supports access to academic and co-curricular activities, and creates opportunities for peer learning across disciplines and year groups.

A well-designed Hall of Residence can also contribute meaningfully to student well-being. Safe, comfortable and inclusive spaces help students adjust to campus life, develop independence and find the community support they need during demanding academic years.

By strengthening residential infrastructure, IIT Kanpur can preserve the immersive campus experience that has shaped generations of students.
