Reimagining healthcare through the convergence of medicine and technology

The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur is being established to create a new model for healthcare education, research and innovation in India.

The School will bring medical sciences together with IIT Kanpur’s strengths in engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, materials science, imaging, diagnostics and data-driven research. Its purpose is to enable clinicians, scientists and engineers to work within one integrated ecosystem—developing technologies and models of care that respond to India’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

Anchored by advanced biomedical research centres and a 500-bed super-specialty hospital, GSMST will connect scientific discovery with clinical practice. The ambition is not simply to create another medical institution, but to build an environment in which healthcare problems can be studied, solutions can be developed and innovations can be tested in real clinical settings.

From scientific discovery to better care

Healthcare innovation often remains fragmented. Engineers may develop promising technologies without sustained access to clinical environments. Medical professionals may identify urgent problems but lack the technical teams and research infrastructure required to develop new solutions. Even strong prototypes can struggle to progress through validation, regulation, manufacturing and adoption.

GSMST is designed to reduce these distances.
By bringing clinical departments, biomedical research, technology development and patient care together, the School can create a continuous pathway from identifying a healthcare need to developing, validating and deploying a solution.

This integrated model will support innovation in areas such as medical devices, diagnostics, imaging, artificial intelligence, robotics, telemedicine, prosthetics, drug discovery and precision healthcare.

About the Gangwal
School

GSMST will combine three interconnected dimensions:

Advanced Clinical Care

A 500-bed super-specialty hospital will provide advanced care while creating a clinical environment for education, research and technology validation. Proposed capabilities include specialised services in oncology, cardiology, neurosciences, gastroenterology, paediatrics, transplantation, diagnostics and surgical care.

Biomedical Research

Advanced biomedical research centres and laboratories will bring engineers, scientists and clinicians together to study healthcare problems at their source. Research in medical devices, diagnostics, imaging, artificial intelligence, robotics, prosthetics, drug discovery and precision healthcare will be shaped by direct access to clinical environments.

Technology Development and Translation

A continuous pathway from identifying a healthcare need to developing, validating and deploying a solution. Prototypes will be tested in real clinical settings and supported through validation, regulation and manufacturing, so that innovations reach patients instead of stalling at the laboratory stage.

A new generation of healthcare leaders

The School will also help develop professionals who are fluent across the boundaries of medicine and technology. Future doctors will benefit from exposure to engineering, data and innovation. Engineers and scientists will gain a deeper understanding of clinical needs, patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.

This interdisciplinary culture can produce a new generation of clinicians, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology leaders capable of building healthcare systems that are more accessible, precise and responsive.

Philanthropic support can help establish:

  • Super-specialty hospital and clinical departments

  • Cancer care and advanced treatment facilities

  • Biomedical research centres and laboratories

  • Medical imaging, diagnostics and surgical infrastructure

  • Faculty chairs and research fellowships

  • Student scholarships and interdisciplinary education

  • Medical-device and diagnostic innovation

  • Technology validation and clinical translation

  • Partnerships with hospitals, industry and global institutions

Support this goal
