IOTA: Interface Office for
Technology Applications

Moving research from the laboratory to the real world

The proposed Interface Office for Technology Applications, or IOTA, will strengthen IIT Kanpur’s ability to translate promising research into technologies that can be tested, adopted and deployed.

Many academic innovations demonstrate strong scientific potential but struggle to progress beyond the prototype stage. They may require further engineering, validation, industry access, development funding or a clearer understanding of market and user needs.

IOTA is being designed to bridge this gap. By supporting technologies as they mature from early-stage research towards market readiness, the Office will help connect IIT Kanpur’s scientific capability with industry, entrepreneurship and real-world application.

From research potential to practical application

Technology translation is rarely a straight path.

A laboratory prototype may need to be redesigned for reliability, cost or scale. A researcher may require an industry partner to validate performance in real operating conditions. A promising technology may need regulatory guidance, specialised facilities or patient capital before it can progress.

IOTA will provide a structured interface through which these needs can be identified and addressed.

Its role will include supporting early-stage ideas, sourcing relevant industry problems, enabling collaborative development and helping technologies advance through higher levels of readiness. The larger objective is to ensure that more IIT Kanpur innovations have a credible pathway from discovery to deployment.

About IOTA

IOTA will work across strategic areas where IIT Kanpur already has significant research and innovation capability, including:

  • MedTech
  • Quantum technologies
  • Semiconductors
  • Unmanned aerial systems
  • Sustainability, CleanTech and AgriTech
  • Cybersecurity

The Office is expected to direct a substantial share of its support towards early-stage technology development and help innovations progress from approximately TRL 4 towards TRL 9.

By bringing researchers, industry partners, funders and technology-development teams together, IOTA can help reduce the distance between academic research and market-ready solutions. It can also strengthen Kanpur and Uttar Pradesh as centres for technology-led enterprise and industrial innovation.

Philanthropic support can help enable:

  • Early-stage technology development

  • Prototype refinement and validation

  • Industry-led research collaborations

  • Technology-readiness and deployment support

  • Translational talent and project teams

  • Market, regulatory and commercialisation pathways

  • Startup and licensing opportunities

Support this goal

Help IIT Kanpur move consequential ideas beyond the laboratory and towards the people, industries and institutions that can benefit from them.
