In higher education, engineering institutes worldwide strive to foster innovation, hands-on learning, and team collaboration among their students. The basic idea behind these initiatives is to fuel the engineering fire inside the youth, push them beyond their boundaries, and make them brainstorm on challenges from different domains of life, like technical, managerial, financial, and leadership mindsets.
These skills become essential in the exponentially developing and demanding life. Team IITK Motorsports was officially established in 2008 to cater to the student community's automotive interests and applied engineering skills. The team aspires to meticulously engineer, analyze, precisely fabricate, and passionately compete alongside esteemed adversaries within the exhilarating realm of motorsports.
They try to foster the above mentioned aims of a team by targeting national and international competitions like Formula Student Italy, Formula Bharat, SUPRA, Mega ATV Championship, etc. Distinguished by their outstanding achievements, the team recently achieved Overall 1st position in the Formula Bharat 2023 Class I EV competition. Presently, their target is manufacturing the first Formula Students Electric Vehicle of IIT Kanpur while simultaneously recognizing and responding to the evolving technology trends. With a clear vision for the future, the team has also embarked on establishing a solid foundation in the Autonomous Automotive domain.
With a rich history in designing and manufacturing combustion vehicles from 2011, the team transitioned its focus to electric cars in 2019, marking a pivotal shift in its engineering endeavors. The transition
posed considerable challenges for the team, particularly in integrating new concepts into their electronic and battery management subsystems. Moreover, the impact of Covid-19, including nationwide lockdowns and the shift to virtual learning, further aggravated the difficulties of the transition, hindering efficient knowledge transfer and practical hands-on experience. Despite the eventual improvement in circumstances, the team members at the time still encountered significant resource constraints. However, with the invaluable support from professors, alums, and the unwavering dedication of fellow team members, the team successfully bridged the gap and is now firmly on track for the upcoming competition.
The team's work encompasses researching essential concepts for vehicle design, employing various software tools to construct and refine designs, conducting analysis of the designs across multiple parameters, and ultimately finalizing the most optimal design. Throughout this process, there is a continual review and feedback loop involving professors, senior members, and industry professionals, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the designs and fostering a collaborative environment for improvement. After completing the design phase, the team proceeds to the procurement, manufacturing, and assembly stages.
Rigorous testing follows, allowing them to identify any necessary modifications. In the final stage, the team brings the meticulously crafted car to the competition, engaging in spirited competition with other teams. During this event, the vehicles are evaluated based on various parameters, including the vehicle concepts, the design and manufacturing quality, and the team’s overall performance. Through this rigorous evaluation, they aim to demonstrate their proficiency, dedication, and commitment to excellence in the world of engineering. The team functions akin to a startup, with diverse divisions collaborating to develop a product and secure funding for its manufacturing. Reflecting the startup spirit, Formula Bharat competition also has a vital component, the Business Pitch Presentation Deck. This submission allows the team to showcase the entrepreneurial aspects of their project, presenting a compelling case for their vehicle's potential, market viability, financials, and the value it brings to the motorsports industry.
IITK Motorsports has always tried to set standards by showcasing its work despite all the challenges and constraints in its way. They have always tried to maintain the epitome of the perfect team working hard towards achieving a common target with all our might. The team derives immense satisfaction from their work, including sleepless nights, relentless brainstorming, and constant discussions. These collective efforts result in valuable experiences, personal growth, and enhanced knowledge, allowing team members to evolve into accomplished professionals. The journey of IITK Motorsports exemplifies the capabilities of engineering students. It inspires countless others to pursue their passion for motorsports and push the boundaries of what is possible in engineering.
