Prof. (Dr.) Balram Bhargava is a preeminent cardiologist, physician-scientist, and global public health leader who currently serves as the Dean and Senior Consultant at Holy Family Hospital in Delhi and as a Professor of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. An alumnus of King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, where he earned his MBBS, MD, and DM in Cardiology, he has dedicated his career to advancing biomedical innovation through the "GANDHI" mandate of Global Affordable Need-Driven Healthcare Innovation. As the Executive Director of the School of International Biodesign (SIB), he has championed frugal engineering, leading to the creation of many low-cost medical technologies and a dozen startups aimed at bridging healthcare gaps in resource-constrained settings.
 

During his tenure as the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Secretary of the Department of Health Research, Professor Bhargava gained international acclaim for India’s indigenous vaccine, COVAXIN. His pioneering work in developing the Platinum Iridium coil coronary stent and the "Mission DELHI" motorcycle paramedic initiative exemplifies his commitment to democratizing medical research and emergency clinical care.
 

Professor Bhargava has been awarded the SN Bose Centenary Award by the Indian National Science Congress, the National Academy of Sciences Platinum Jubilee Award, the Tata Innovation Fellowship the Ranbaxy Award, OP Bhasin Award, Vasvik Award and more recently the UNESCO Equatorial Guinea Prize for Life Sciences; Dr. LEE Jong-Wook Memorial Prize for Public Health, 2019 by WHO Hqrs, Geneva. He is also a recipient of the Padmashri award. He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (FNASc), Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
