The Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur was established in 1961. Since then the department has been producing high-quality technical manpower needed by industry, R&D organizations, and academic institutions. The Department offers B. Tech. degree in Civil Engineering, B. Tech.-M. Tech. Dual degree in Civil Engineering, MS (Research) and M. Tech. degree in Civil Engineering with seven specializations, i.e., Environmental Engineering, Geoinformatics, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering and Management, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering. The Department also has a vibrant Ph.D. program in all of the above-mentioned specializations. The department also offers eMasters program in Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management (SCPM). The academic activities of the Department emphasize a deep understanding of fundamental principles, the development of creative ability to handle the reallife challenges of Civil Engineering, and analytical ability to solve problems that are interdisciplinary in nature. The Department also encourages its students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, which help in the development and nurturing of team spirit, and in developing organizational skills. The faculty members of the Department are involved in high‐quality research and consultancy activities, serving on national-level committees, and they continue to provide academic leadership roles in the country. The alumni of this department are holding important positions in both industry and academic institutions of repute.
