Development of household-scale treatment unit for removal of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), from groundwater: A prototype for a household-scale low-cost filter for Cr(VI) removal from contaminated groundwater was developed in 2020 under the IMPRINT-1 grant. Both laboratory and field trials in contaminated waters have been successful and resulted in continuous monitoring of nearby areas in Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, and Chhiwali in Fatehpur. The prototype was successful in a 3-month long field trial at a volunteering household in village Khanchandpur and Rania in Kanpur Dehat with Cr(VI)-contaminated water with ~5 mg/L. Two different treatment methods, chemical- and electro-coagulation, were used in the filter unit. These prototypes and field trial are documented in the following two journal papers: Bandyopadhyay et al. JWPE (2023) and Singh et al. EES (2023)
-
Field monitoring tool for hexavalent chromium detection in groundwater: Developed in collaboration with Industry partner, Foundation for Environmental Monitoring (FFEM), in 2019 under the IMPRINT-1 grant, this smartphone-based tool can successfully measure hexavalent chromium in water. Both laboratory and field trials in contaminated waters were successful and resulted in continuous monitoring of nearby areas Khanchandpur and Rania in Kanpur Dehat and Chhiwali in Fatehpur. These prototypes are documented in the following journal papers: Bamane et al. ABC (2021) and Singh et al. EES (2023)
-
Validation of a modified biosand filter for removal of arsenic from groundwater: A prototype for a household-scale low-cost filter for arsenic removal developed by NGO Sehgal Foundation was validated and successfully field trailed in Bihar by our collaborative effort. The validation of prototype and conduct of field trials are documented in the following journal paper: Verma et al. EES (2021)
-
A low-cost household-scale modified biosand filter of excess fluoride from groundwater. The filter costs ~₹ 5000 and each batch treats 10 L within an hour @ ~₹11 per 100 L. This filter is up for field trials.
-
Validation of decentralized drum composting of biodegradable solid waste: Successful undergraduate projects and pilot studies led to the validation and gradual implementation of this waste management solution to the entire IIT Kanpur campus between 2018-20. It also motivated the formation of a start-up at IITK. This effort is captured in this short video: https://youtu.be/a-U01NkAUx4
