Planetary Mission Development: Manufacturing, automation, instrumentation.
Background: The successes of missions to the Moon and Mars have whetted India’s appetite for planetary exploration. Missions for Venus (Shukrayn), asteroids and even exoplanets - planets outside our Solar Systems — are planned. Mangalyn 2 is under development. A series of Chandrayn missions are cleared, with the aim to put an Indian on the Moon by 2050.
Created in 2022, the Department of SPASE (Space, Planetary & Astronomical Sciences and Engineering) at IIT Kanpur — first of its kine in India — is uniquely placed to take a leadership role by training required technical manpower, develops scientific payloads for planetary missions and, even, planning and leading planetary missions.
