Prof. Somak Bhattacharyya is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University.
Prof. Somak Bhattacharyya is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi. He received his Honours degree in Physics from Scottish Church College, Kolkata, in 2003. He subsequently earned his Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology degrees from the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics, University of Calcutta, in 2006 and 2008, respectively. His M.Tech thesis was carried out at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He was awarded the University Gold Medal for securing first position in the M.Tech programme. In 2009, he served as a Lecturer at the Academy of Technology. Prof. Bhattacharyya obtained his PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 2015.
Following his doctoral studies, he worked briefly as a Senior Project Engineer (Ad-hoc) in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. In December 2015, he joined the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. Since December 2016, he has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at IIT (BHU), Varanasi.
Prof. Bhattacharyya has published over 50 articles in international journals and more than 90 papers in reputed peer-reviewed international and national conference proceedings. He is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Young Scientist Award from the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), awarded at the Electromagnetic Theory Symposium 2013 (Hiroshima), the Regional Radio Science Conference 2015 (New Delhi), and the Asia-Pacific Radio Science Conference 2016 (Seoul). In recognition of his contributions to radio sciences, URSI has conferred upon him honorary lifetime membership.
He has served as a reviewer for more than 50 journals, including IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Electronics Letters, and Nature Scientific Reports. He organized the URSI Regional Conference on Radio Science (URSI-RCRS 2020) at IIT (BHU), Varanasi, which was attended by nearly 300 delegates from across India.
Prof. Bhattacharyya is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Life Fellow of The Optical Society of India. He has also been elected as an Associate Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology, and as a Fellow of IETE and the Antenna Test and Measurement Society (ATMS), India. Since 2021, he has been serving as the IEEE Region 10 Coordinator for the Young Professionals Group of the MTT Society. He is a member of the IEEE MTT Society Technical Program Committee and the only representative from India in its Speakers Bureau programme.
Under his guidance, the IEEE MTT Society Student Branch Chapter at IIT (BHU), Varanasi, received the Outstanding Chapter Award in 2022. His recent recognitions include the Innovation Award in the Microwave Field (2021) from the IEEE AP-MTT Joint Chapter, Gujarat Section; the IETE-Smt. Manorama Rathore Memorial Award 2022; and the IEEE UP Section Outstanding Section Volunteer Award 2022. He is also an enlisted Travelling Lecturer of Optica.
