Mr.Sanjay Malhotra is an Indian bureaucrat and a senior IAS officer from the 1990 batch of the Rajasthan cadre. He is currently serving as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, a role he took on from 11 December 2024. Over the course of his career, he has held several important positions in the government. He has served as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power and also as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Corporation
Mr. Malhotra did his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1989. He went to do his Masters in Public Policy from the Princeton University.
Mr. Malhotra is a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Rajasthan cadre. Before joining as Chairman and Managing Director of REC Limited, he was posted as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power. He has excellent leadership skills and has over 30 years of experience working in the areas of power, finance and taxation, information technology, mines, etc.
While as a Principal Secretary, in-charge of Energy Department in Rajasthan, Mr. Malhotra was instrumental in appointment of distribution franchisees in four towns, introduction of PPP in transmission and innovations in metering, billing and collection. As Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power, he dealt with transmission, distribution, reforms and restructuring and was deeply involved in reforms, policy initiatives and privatization of distribution utilities of Union Territories. He is also the Ex-officio Chairman on the Board of REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of REC.
