Floods in Bihar |
The plains of north Bihar are some of the most susceptible areas in India, prone to flooding. Drained by two major rivers the Kosi and Gandak, and several smaller systems such as the Burhi Gandak, Baghmati and Kamla-Balan, the plains of North Bihar have experienced extensive and frequent loss of life and property over the last several decades. One of the most devastative floods in this region occurred in 2008 in the Kosi basin triggered by a breach in the left embankment at Kusaha in Nepal which affected 3 million people in Nepal and north Bihar. Extensive research is available on hydrological and morphological characteristics and flood risk analysis of north Bihar rivers.
