The MTech program offers a broad curriculum alongside focused research culminating in a thesis, providing students with the breadth and depth needed for careers in both academia and industry.

Duration of the Program

The residence requirements for the MTech program is four semesters. The maximum duration for completing the M.Tech Program is four years.

Academic Session

The academic year normally begins in the fourth week of July. The academic year consists of three terms, two semesters and a summer term: First Semester from August first week to December first week, Second Semester from January first week to May first week, and Summer Term from mid May to mid July.

Program Requirement

An MTech student in the Department of Intelligent Systems is required to do 144 credits of course work and thesis. The minimum course requirement is 63 credits. In addition, the student must complete a minimum of 72 credits of thesis work. Remaining 9 credits may be through either a course or thesis work.

A typical load per semester is 36 credits, but a student may be allowed to register for 27 credits if he/she wishes to go underload. A student can register for 9 or 18 credits of thesis in a summer session.

Of all the courses a student does, at least seven courses have to be from the list of IS post graduate courses. At least one of these courses has to be from the Digital AI basket and at least one course from the Cyber-Physical Systems basket.

A student, in consultation with her/his advisor, may propose a course outside this list to be a suitable course for her/his M.Tech coursework. A written request must be submitted to DPGC for registration in such courses and the student must receive a written permission to register in such course(s). The deadline for submitting such a request is EOD the pre-registration process starts for the next semester. The DPGC convener, in consultation with the DPGC members, may approve such a course as an IS-equivalent PG course within two days.

Financial Assistance

Non-sponsored candidates admitted to the regular full-time MTech Program who are Indian Nationals are eligible for financial assistance as follows:

  1. Teaching Assistantship: Candidates admitted to the MTech program after qualifying GATE will be offered the Teaching Assistantship (TA) or Research Assistantship (RA) provided they have secured at least 60 percent marks (55 percent for SC/ST candidates) in their qualifying degree examination. A teaching assistant can be asked to conduct labs, take tutorial sessions, help an instructor in grading, and other course-related tasks. A TA may be asked to support the department in various academic activities, such as providing help in maintaining and upgrading department labs, downloading, installing software, etc. Currently the assistantship amount is Rs. 12,400/- per month. It also gives a 50% waiver in tuition fee.
  2. Research Assistantship: Several faculty members are working on sponsored projects, supported by government funding agencies such as MHRD, DIT, DST, DRDO, etc. Some projects are also funded by Industry. An MTech student can be hired by a faculty member as a research assistant to help him conduct research. In such cases, an assistantship amount, decided by the concerned faculty member, can be provided. No student can draw more than one scholarship/assistance at a time.
