The Department of Information Systems (IS) is now accepting applications for its PhD program through the Online Application Portal.
Admission Requirements
Candidates with Master's degree in engineering will be selected on the basis of marks/CPI and interview. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering or science (4 year program) will be selected on the basis of marks/CPI, GATE AIR (wherever applicable), and an interview.
Eligibility Criteria

The “specified minimum” marks/CPI (Cumulative Performance Index), referred to in subsequent sections, implies a minimum of 55 percent marks /5.5 (on a 10 point scale) as long as it is not less than the minimum pass marks/CPI; otherwise, the “specified minimum” marks/CPI implies the minimum pass marks/CPI.
The candidate must have one of the following:
- Master’s degree in Engineering with marks/ CPI not below the specified minimum (as specified in PG manual)
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science (4 year program) with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI and a GATE AIR within 5% of the total candidates (requirement for GATE score is waived for candidates with bachelor's degree in engineering or science from CFTIs)
- Master's degree in Science or an allied area while satisfying each of the following three criteria:(a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master's degree, (b) first division in bachelor's degree, and (c) GATE AIR within 5% of the total candidates/JRF (this requirement of JRF/GATE score is waived for candidates with master's degree in science or allied area from CFTIs with a CPI > 8.0).
Online degrees are not accepted for admission.
Candidates belonging to the reserved category (OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST/DAP) should provide appropriate category certificate in the prescribed format of Government of India for OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST/DAP, or else they will be admitted as general students. There is no reservation for candidates belonging to the OBC category.
Shortlisting
The department may utilize a cut-off CPI/GATE score for shortlisting the candidates being called for interview. The cut-off score will depend on the number of applications received.
Valid GATE specializations
Wherever GATE is required, students only from the following GATE specializations will be considered for shortlisting:
- CS: Computer Science and Information Technology
- EC: Electronics and Communication Engineering
- ME: Mechanical Engineering
- ST: Statistics
- DA: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- MA: Mathematics
- XH: Humanities and Social Sciences (Paper C1)
Documents
At the time of applications, the candidates must provide the following:
- Marksheets for their qualifying degree
- GATE score card, if applicable
- NOC from employer, if applicable (format)
- Category certificate, if applicable
Sponsored and Part-time PhD

Such candidates should submit an NOC form their employer in the required format.
Preference for a faculty supervisor
Before the interviews, the candidates will be asked (via email) to specify up to two preferences for the faculty members whom they wish to join. However, the PhD thesis supervisor will be finalized only after the student joins and makes an application to the department.
