Reaching IIT Campus on arrival to Chennai

Location of IIT Madras

The IIT Madras campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road, half-way between the Raj Bhavan and Adayar bus terminus, i.e. about 12 kms from Chennai Central. The other landmarks are the Guindy Snake Park adjacent to the IIT Main gate, Gandhi Mandapam (Anna University Stop) and the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) campus Opposite to IIT Madras. It is also near to the Rajbhavan which is the residence of His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The following are the ways to reach IIT Madras from railway stations (Central & Egmore), Airport, and Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT):

From Chennai Central

If you are traveling with light luggage, you can take a city bus to IIT. The bus stop is opposite to the Central Station .The direct buses to the campus are 19B and 5C. Alternatively you can reach Saidapet by taking a Bus bearing No.18 and from there number of buses goes to Adayar and they are 5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 147, 23C etc. You can get down in front of the IIT Main Gate. Or else you can take a bus to Adayar Signal i.e. the bus bearing these numbers 1LSS, 4LSS, 1A,1C,1D,6A will go in that direction. From Adyar you can travel in either of these buses 5B, 47, 47A, 47D, 147, 23C to reach IIT Madras Main Gate.

Local Train

You can walk down to Park Railway Station which is opposite to the Central Station and take an EMU (local) train to reach Kasturba Nagar (Adayar) or Guindy or Saidapet station and reach the campus from there by the buses mentioned above. It is advisable that do not use this mode if you are traveling with a heavy luggage.

Taxi or Auto

If you are carrying a heavy luggage (you are suppose to be) it would be convenient for you to hire an auto or a taxi. Chennai Central has a prepaid auto/taxi service and this is manned by the City Police. The fare to the campus from Chennai Central will be around Rs.150/- for an auto and Rs.250/- for a taxi. When you travel either by Auto or Taxe you can get dropped at the Taramani Guest House, which is about 3.2 kms from the IIT Main Gate.

Chennai-Egmore

If you arrive at the Chennai Egmore station, you can take 23C to IIT or a 23E, 23A, 23G to Adayar Signal from where there are a number of buses to IIT. Current auto and taxi fares from Egmore are around Rs.120/- and Rs.225/- respectively. You can also make use of call taxi service mentioned below. Alternatively, a local train to Guindy can also be taken.

From Airport

If you arrive at the Chennai Meenambakkam Airport, you can make your way to the Institute in an auto or a taxi or a Call-Taxi.

Alternatively, if you want to come by city bus, you can take PP21 to reach the Institute or 21G to IIT (bus stop) which is very near from the main gate, or you can find lot of buses to Saidapet from the airport. From Saidapet you get many buses to the Institute which are mentioned above.

From Bus Terminus

If you are traveling by bus all along from your town and reach Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, commonly known as CMBT, from CMBT, you can come to institute by taking city bus 23M or by Call-Taxi or Auto. The fares would be Rs.150/- by auto and Rs.250/- by car.

From Main Gate to Taramani Guest House (TGH)

Those who are coming to campus by city buses can use internal transport to reach TGH. IIT runs buses from the main gate to the hostel zone. These buses are run at a frequency of 15 minutes from 6:15 am till 10.00 pm.
