Program Overview
Technological advances have brought changes to organizations and industries across the world. This has led to ever-increasing need for professionals who have analytical, managerial skills along with sound technical knowledge. Foreseeing this need, IME Department has designed its M.Tech Programme to help existing engineers gain managerial skills.
The M.Tech program is the flagship program of IME department. It is one of the oldest to introduce industrial engineering in India. The program provides a perfect blend of industrial engineering and management science to its students. The well-defined structure of course work and a yearlong thesis work provides in-depth knowledge of concepts to students. The intervening summer internships is used for practical project work in industries.
The program focuses on developing expertise in management engineering. It covers diverse topics from both the management and engineering paradigms. Quantitative modeling methods, improvement of productivity, quality and profitability in the manufacturing sector, supply chain management and application of optimization techniques in finance, marketing and IT are some of the areas to which students are exposed.
Course Structure
During the two years course work, student is supposed to take a minimum of 9 courses, 4 of which are compulsory to get the basic understanding of various fields. Student is free to choose other 5 courses from a wide range of alternatives. A two month summer internship is an integral part of this course which gives much needed industry exposure to students. One year thesis work helps to focus on some research work in a particular area of interest.
Projects
The reputation of IME owes to the exceptional caliber of its esteem faculty. The department prides itself on creating an environment of substantial academic freedom overlaid by rigorous standards of excellence and socially responsive practices
The solution of every problem is situation specific, the students of IME department seeks project opportunities in such situations .The esteem faculty along with the students of IME department is highly involved in solving real time industry problems. Many of the courses contain course projects as a mandatory part so that students can understand the practical applicability of concepts in real life situations
Some of the project fields are as follows:
1. Decision support systems
2. Simulation of business processes
3. Marketing Research
4. Data mining
5. Supply chain management and coordination
The projects on which we are currenlty working on:
1. General Purpose Production Shop Simulation Laboratory under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technologies (NME-ICT) which aims at the development of a virtual simulation lab for learning production shop simulations. (Deepu Philip)
2. Entrepreneurial Decision Making Analysis through virtual simulation game (in collaboration with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA) to analyze the decision making styles of entrepreneurs across different cultures in the world. (B V Phani & Deepu Philip)
3. Smart Systems and Operations Laboratory (SSOL) is aimed at developing such innovative solutions and tools for different systems that needs to be “smart”. The laboratory will support research activities in design, modelling, monitoring, and control of complex systems (systems of systems) and their operations. (Deepu Philip)
