Academic Background:

Vijaya completed her M.Sc and Ph.D degrees at the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. After a short post-doctoral stint and 4 years of teaching at SSSIHL (Andhra Pradesh), she joined the Physics department of IIT Bombay in 1997. Subsequently, she left IIT Bombay and joined the Physics department of IIT Kanpur in June 2011.

Education

  • PhD, (IIT Madras)
  • M.Sc., (IIT Madras)
  • B.Sc., (Meenakshi College, Madras)

Research Interests:

For her doctoral thesis, Vijaya worked on experimental study of optical phase conjugation in the broad theme of nonlinear optics. While at IIT Bombay, she guided Ph.D students in topics related to fiber optics, nonlinear optics and photonic crystals, all in experimental domains. At IIT Kanpur, her research interests have widened to multiple topics in experimental Electromagnetics research, including nonlinear optics, fiber lasers, photonic crystals, integrated optics, nonlinear dynamics in optics, plasmonics, antennas, frequency-selective surfaces and metasurfaces, imaging and specialty optics. With the help of sponsored research funding, her laboratory hosts the necessary infrastructure for research in these topics. Apart from adapting specialized experimental techniques to their research work, her students also get trained in making any specialized samples required for their studies, characterizing them and conducting the simulations.
