Our Institute is renowned for its liberal ambience and dynamism, and we welcome you amidst its fraternity of scholars, staff, and students. You may already know that the Institute is a pioneer in the domain of engineering science education, relative grading system, tutorial and the semester system, and many more innovations unheard of at other places, when the pedagogical models were at their infancy in our country. At IITK the teaching responsibilities are shared equally by the faculty without reference to seniority. Indeed, we have learnt to appreciate its many contributions over time.


Through this note, the benefits and privileges that the faculty enjoys on campus, both personal and professional, are summarized. We hope that your tenure at the Institute will be productive and enjoyable.

 

 

 

1.

You will be provided with accommodation on campus at a nominal rent. We have three types: Type III, IV, and V. Type III are apartments of area roughly 1200 sq ft and are provided to new faculty. Type IV are houses of area roughly 2000 sq ft, and faculty with Academic Pay Level 12 onwards are eligible for it. Type V are houses of area roughly 2600 sq ft and faculty of Academic Pay Level 14A onwards are eligible for it. Amongst the eligible faculty, the allocation is done on seniority basis.

Every apartment / house is connected via high-speed LAN, and has a phone. The Institute reimburses phone bills (including mobile) up to Rs. 800 per month for Academic Pay Level 10 and 11, Rs. 1500 per month for Academic Pay Level 12 or more and Rs. 1800 per month for Academic Pay Level 14A or more.

The campus has a large number of recreational avenues including a full-sized swimming pool, squash, tennis, and badminton courts; fully equipped gymnasium; athletics, cricket, hockey, and football fields. There is an active Faculty Club which organizes cultural events.

We have several schools on campus: Kislaya for kindergarden, Campus School for grade I-V, and Kendriya Vidyalaya School for up to class XII. Besides, a full day creche for children between 1-3 years of age is operational.

 

 

 

1.

The salary has several components:

 
  1. The first one is Pay in Academic Level, which changes with the designation. For Assistant Professors, there are four levels of Academic Pay Level 10, 11, 12 and 13A1. The second is for faculty who have completed one year of their post PhD experience. The third is for those who have completed three years as post-doc and/or faculty. The fourth is for Assistant Professors who have completed at least three years in Academic Pay Level 12. For Associate Professors, the Academic Pay Level is 13A2 and for Professors Academic Pay Level 14A.

  2. Second component is Transport Allowance (TA). It is fixed at Rs 7200.

  3. The third component is Dearness Allowance (DA), which changes every six months. At present, it is 12% of (Basic Pay and TA).

  4. As per your offer, for examination, if your salary would be Rs. 89800 (Basic Pay) + Rs. 7200 (TA) + Rs. 11640 (12% DA on Basic pay & TA) = Rs. 108640.

The Institute also provides an additional top-up salary of Rs 25,000 per month for the first three years of your service. For detailed terms and conditions refer office order No. DF/IF -00/20 16-IITK/1989 dated 15th September 2016 available at the website of Office of Faculty Affairs.

3.

After three years of service, you will become eligible for Young Faculty Fellowship (open for faculty of age up to 40 years) providing top-up salary of Rs 10,000 per month for three years or Faculty Chair providing a top-up salary of Rs 25,000 per month for three years. Selection to these positions is based on performance.

 

 

1.

An initiation grant of Rs 3 lakhs is provided on joining. In addition, the Institute provides up to an additional Rs 22 lakhs for equipment to set up a research laboratory.

2.

Cumulative Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) of Rs 3 lakhs for a block of three years which can be used for attending conferences and buying books. The current block is 2017-20.

3.

Fellowship to all doctoral students is provided by the Institute.

 

 

1.

Your family including dependents is entitled to free medical care at the Institute Health Center, as well as for reimbursement of medical expenses for treatment at outside hospitals. The reimbursement is subject to Government of India norms.

2.

Children’s school fee up to grade XII is reimbursed subject to a limit of Rs. 2250 per month per child and at most two children after your regularization.

3.

Leave Travel Concession (LTC) is provided to you and the dependent family members in blocks of four years to travel once to your home town and once to any place within India. The current block is 2018-21. As per current Government of India rules new recruits are entitled for HLTC/LTC as per the detailed notification No. 31011/7/2013-Estt.(A-IV), Department of Personnel and Training Establishment (A-IV) dated 26th September 2014 available at the website of Office of Faculty Affairs.

 

 
 

These are as per the statues apart from rules as approved by the competent authority.

 

 

 

The Institute has a Health Centre (HC) equipped with pharmacy, a clinical laboratory and a 30-bed indoor ward. Emergency care is provided round-the-clock. In addition to having male and female doctors on its rolls, the Institute retains the services of experts as "Medical Adviser" on a consultancy basis. IIT Kanpur has amenities like: Books Club, Faculty Club, Gliding club, Gymnasium, Nursery, Swimming Pool, spouse employment cell, gymnasiums and other different types of Sports courts, Aerobics and Yoga Hall, Visitors' Hostel and Women's association.
