Faculty Benefits

 
 

Our Institute is renowned for its liberal ambiance and positive dynamism and we welcome the faculty members amidst its fraternity of scholars, staff and students. The Institute is pioneer in the domain of engineering, science education, relative grading system, tutorial and the semester system, and many more innovations unheard of at other places, when the pedagogical models were at their infancy in our country. At IITK the teaching responsibilities are shared equally by the faculty without reference to seniority.

Through this note, the benefits and privileges that the faculty enjoys on campus, both personal and professional, are summarized:

 

 

 

1.

A faculty member will be provided with accommodation on campus at a nominal rent. We have three types: Type Ill, IV, and V. Type III are apartments of area roughly 1200 sq ft and are provided to new faculty. Type IV are houses of area roughly 2000 sq ft, and faculty with Academic Grade Pay (AGP) Rs 8000 onwards are eligible for it. Type V are houses of area roughly 2600 sq ft and faculty of AGP Rs 10500 onwards are eligible for it. Amongst the eligible faculty, the allocation is done on seniority basis.

Every apartment / house is connected via high-speed LAN and a phone. The institute reimburses phone bills (including mobile) up to Rs 800 per month for Academic Grade Pay (AGP) Rs 7000, Rs 1500 per month for Academic Grade Pay (AGP) Rs 8000 or more and Rs 1800 per month for Academic Grade Pay (AGP) Rs 10500 or more.

3.

The campus has a large number of recreational avenues including a full-sized swimming pool; squash, tennis, and badminton courts; fully equipped gym; athletics, cricket, hockey, and football fields. There is an active faculty club which organizes regular events and a new faculty club building is coming up.

 

 

 

1.

The salary has several components:

 
  • The first one is Academic Grade Pay (AGP), which changes with the designation. For Assistant Professors, there are three levels of Academic Grade Pay: Rs 7000, Rs 8000, and Rs 9000. The first is for faculty within three years of their PhDs. The second is for faculty who have completed three years as post-doc and/or faculty. The third is for faculty who has completed three years at Rs 8000 Grade Pay. For Associate Professors, the Academic Grade Pay is Rs 9500 and for Professors Rs 10500.

  • The second component is Band Pay, which increases every year by 3%. Assistant Professors with AGP Rs 7000 start at Band Pay Rs 27070, with AGP Rs 8000 at Rs 30000, with AGP Rs 9000 at Rs 37400. Associate Professors start at Rs 42800 and Professors start at Rs 48000. AGP and Band Pay together form the Basic Pay (BP).

  • Third component is Transport Allowance (TA). It is fixed at Rs 3200.

  • The fourth component is Dearness Allowance (DA). At present, it is 125% of (BP + TA). DA is revised twice every year.

  • The current salary may be calculated as AGP+Band Pay+ Rs 3200 (TA) + DA on Basic pay & TA (it varies with Basic Pay).

The institute also provides an additional top-up salary of Rs 25,000 per month for the first three years service.

3.

After three years of service, the faculty members become eligible for Young Faculty Fellowship (open for faculty of age up to 40 years) providing top-up salary of Rs 10,000 per month for three years.

 

 

1.

An initiation grant of Rs 3 lakhs is provided on joining. In addition, the institute provides up to an additional Rs 22 lakhs for buying equipments to set up the lab against a proposal within a few months of joining.

Stipend to all graduate students is provided by the institute.

3.

Professional Development Account (PDA) and Departmental Promotional Account (DPA) Faculty members at IIT Kanpur are involved in carrying out Sponsored Research, Consultancy, Continuing Education/outreach activities, which need extra efforts and time. To encourage these activities, institute approved in 1993 that a faculty member can opt to have a Professional Development Account (PDA) in which part of overheads from the projects and honorarium out of outreach activities can be transferred and utilized by the faculty members for their professional development activities.

4.

Cumulative Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) CPDA (Cumulative Professional Development Allowance) of Rs 3 lakhs for a block of three years (current block is 2014-17). CPDA is available to every member of faculty, in case of the faculty who join the Institute in the middle of a block period will be eligible for their CPDA calculated on a quarterly basis. The CPDA should be allowed to be used for: Reimbursement of travel and other expenses related to participating in national/international conferences, research visits, invited lectures, workshops, summer- and winter schools, Paying membership fees of various professional bodies, Purchase of books/monographs/journal subscriptions/computer software/data bases, Meeting various contingency expenses as per approved norms, Reimbursement of telephone/mobile charges. It is also allowed to be used for purchase of Electronic Books (E-Books), the license of the e- book will be entered in Department CPDA Stock registers.

 

 

 

1.

Family including all dependents of the faculty members are entitled to free medical care at the institute health center, as well as for reimbursement of medical expenses for treatment at outside hospitals. The reimbursement is subject to government of India CGHS norms.

2.

Children school fees up to grade XII is reimbursed subject to a limit of Rs 18000 per year per child and at most for two children.

3.

Leave Travel Concession (LTC) is provided to the dependents of the faculty members in blocks of four years to travel once to your home town and once to any place within India. The current block is 2014-17.

 

 

 

 

The Institute has a Health Centre (HC) equipped with pharmacy, a clinical laboratory and a 30-bed indoor ward. Emergency care is provided round-the-clock. In addition to having male and female doctors on its rolls, the Institute retains the services of experts as "Medical Adviser" on a consultancy basis. IIT Kanpur has amenities like: Books Club, Faculty Club, Gliding club, Gymnasium, Nursery, Swimming Pool, spouse employment cell, gymnasiums and other different types of Sports courts, Aerobics and Yoga Hall, Visitors' Hostel and Women's association.
