Frequently Asked Questions:

1) I am an IIT student, how do I proceed?

Ans: Find a faculty member at SFU in your area of interest and contact them with your CV and expression of interest. You will also need an 'anchor' for the internship on the IIT-end so please find a faculty member at IIT willing to supervise you from that side. It would be useful if you can look at the MITACS forms above, fill them out and send them along with your emails to both the faculty contacts (at SFU and IIT).

http://www.sfu.ca/engineering.html

http://www.sfu.ca/computing.html

http://www.sfu.ca/mechatronics.html

2) What level of students are eligible?

Ans: The exchange is open to all IIT students, undergraduate or graduate. Undergraduate students in the third year or beyond will get preference but undergraduate students in the second year are also encouraged to apply. All graduate students, Master's or PhD are eligible and encouraged to seek a host lab at SFU for their research.

3) Is there a deadline?

Ans: This exchange is open all year around, till the seats allocated are filled up. For undergraduate students looking to visit Vancouver in summer period to coincide with your summer holidays, it would be important to start early. Normally, MITACS will take 4 weeks to approve completed paperwork filed with them. The visa process in India will take some time.Factor these times to get an idea of when you have to start to seek SFU faculty interest to apply.

4) Who do I contact?

Ans: See point (1) above. Find your host lab from these links and contact your host lab Professor directly with your CV.

http://www.sfu.ca/engineering.html

http://www.sfu.ca/computing.html

http://www.sfu.ca/mechatronics.html

Find an anchor at the IIT side, a Professor their who can supervise your internship from that end.

5) The MITACS link shows the deadline has passed.

Ans: This program is a parallel new program to the MITACS GRA program and it is specific to IIT and SFU student exchange. It uses the same template forms as the regular MITACS GRA but it is open all year around. Do not worry about deadline being passed.

6) Is this exchange open to any lab at SFU?

Ans: Yes, you can find any supervisor at SFU whose research you are interested in working on. Faculty of Applied Science interns will however get an additional stipend of $2000 CAD.

7) Where do I send completed applications?

Ans: Applicants should submit completed application packages to SFU's Mitacs representative Allison Brennan at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with a cc to Mirza Faisal Beg ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) if you are applying to a FAS faculty member.

The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management (ISOM) at the University of Florida (UF), Gainesville, extends a warm welcome to bright undergraduate students from IIT Kanpur to pursue their PhD in Management Information Systems or Operations Management. After the completion of their PhDs, students from the program have joined management schools within the United States and around the world. Thanks to the burgeoning interest in areas such as business analytics, cloud computing and Big Data, the desire to complete a degree in MIS is at an all-time high and thus the demand for qualified faculty to instruct in such courses is also very high. Fresh PhDs are often attracting salaries in excess of $150,000 from business schools.

The mission of the PhD Program is to educate scholars who will make substantial contributions in their field of research. Our primary goal is to train graduate students to make such contributions. To achieve this goal, the faculty in the department of ISOM attempt to place students in productive academic research environments. This means that the PhD students within the department are actively involved in research from their very first semester, and are encouraged to work with the faculty from early on. We have a very collegial atmosphere within the department, and so the PhD students can freely walk into the room of any faculty member to discuss their research. The program currently offers a stipend of just above $30,000 a year (in addition to fringe benefits such as health insurance), which is more than adequate for a comfortable life in a college town like Gainesville.

If the idea of doing independent research in a dynamic environment sounds exciting, you are encouraged to go through more details here at Web. You can review the information packet there to learn more. Further details regarding prerequisites, curriculum and admission requirements can also be found from the website Web (including details of the current faculty - several of whom are from different IITs and one of whom is from IIT Kanpur! - and their research interests), and you are always welcome to contact us directly. We are looking for students with very strong foundations in mathematics (a look at the curriculum in the initial years will give you an idea about the kind of background we are looking for) and an interest in conducting novel research in information systems and operations management.

Characterization of suspension plasma sprayed coatings

Duration: May –July 2014 Location: Production Technology Centre (PTC), Trollhättan, Sweden Organization: Production Technology West (PTW), University West

Who we are?

The research team PTW is a part of University West located at Sweden's most modern laboratory PTCworking in close collaboration with manufacturing industry. For details, please visit the website http://www.ptw.hv.se/ .

Project description

Suspension Plasma Spraying (SPS) is coating deposition technique in which a suspension with particles in sub-micrometre to nanometre range is used as a precursor to deposit coatings. This process is well suited for the deposition of materials with high melting points due to the large amount of heat generated, like ceramics. The major applications for SPS coatings include Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). In addition to being introduced to the SPS process, the project work consists of characterisation of SPS coatings fabricated for the applications mentioned above. The characterisation work will include sample preparation, mounting and polishing to analyse microstructure with techniques like optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The materials present in the coating will be analysed by Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD).

Application Form 3rd Call for Application

Call for applications for PhD – Apply by the 5th of December 2013 Melbourne India Postgraduate Program (MIPP) established for a select group of high performing PhD students

Summary

The programme is designed for potential/current Ph. D. Students to be executed in the following modes.

Mode I: Those who have/are graduated/graduating from IIT Kanpur can apply for a Ph. D. position at the University of Melbourne. The students will be registered at UOM and the degree will be awarded by UOM. However, they have to have a Co-supervisor from IIT Kanpur. Such students can do their part of research at IIT Kanpur, or the IITK Supervisor can visit UOM briefly. Supervisors at Melbourne and IITK and the student would stay connected through, say skype or e-mail on a regular basis.

Mode II: This mode is for students doing Ph. D. at IITK. Again, the student will be guided by supervisors from both Universities. The student shall visit UOM for a brief period (e.g., a semester) to conduct a part of her/his research there. IITK Supervisor may also visit UOM. The degree in Mode II will be awarded by IITK.

It is preferred in Mode II that students join the MIPP programme as soon as they enrol for the Ph. D. Programme at IITK, preferably before deciding the research topic, as it would be easier to find a co-supervisor at UOM. Applications can be submitted at any time for Mode II.

In both Modes, academics on both UOM and IITK will collaborate, visit each other, write research papers and apply for research grants with their PhD students either enrolled at and funded by UOM (Mode 1) or enrolled at and funded by IITK (Mode 2).

Mode I:
