Linear Cascade Tunnel (small)
The cascade wind tunnel consists of a large centrifugal blower driven by a 10 hp (7.5 KW) synchronous motor. The motor is controlled by a variable frequency drive that allows for precise control of tunnel inlet velocity. A short diffuser section is attached to the blower housing to smoothen the flow before it enters the settling chamber. The settling chamber has two mesh screens, each of 5mm size. A contraction section with an area ratio of 16 accelerates the flow to the required velocity at the entrance of the test section. The test section is 150 mm x 150 mm and has transparent walls. The top and bottom wall are made of discs connected together with rods on both side, forming a rotating platform for the cascade.
Specifications:
Drive System: 7.5 KW variable speed
Maximum motor RPM: 1450
Test Section size: 150 mm x 150 mm
Maximum test section inlet Velocity: 50 m/s
Completed Research
Experimental Investigation of Leading-Edge serrations (tubercles) on compressor performance: The research was done in multiple parts. The first set of experiments focused on determining the best geometry for the tubercles. The amplitude, wavelength and stagger angle were varied and their effect on performance was studied. This was done using multi-hole probes and oil flow visualization technique. Further experiments focused on the understanding the flow field and turbulence characteristics of blades with serrations. This was done using multi-hole probes, hot-wire anemometry and Particle Image Velocimetry. These experiments were complemented with measurements using a load cell, for better understanding the performance of the cascade.
