For Ph.D. Admission
The department follows semester system. The first semester normally commences in the last week of July every year and the second in the last week of December. Admissions to the Ph.D. programme may be made in either or both of the two semesters. The Head of the Department may take the decision in this regard. Admissions to the Ph.D. programme are normally made in April-May for the first semester and in November-December for the second semester. The Dean of Academic Affairs will notify the admission calendar each semester. In addition, the department may process applications for admissions to Ph.D. Programmes on a continuous basis and admit students as per the existing procedure. The candidates admitted during the course of a semester, would be required to register for thesis with proportionate reduction in units.

Note: The written test is an aptitude test of one hour duration. It comprises of multiple choice type questions. Examinees will be tested on quantitative, analytical reasoning and verbal abilities.

Process
Admission to Ph.D. Programme, IME Department, IIT Kanpur
(Not applicable to NRI/PIO and foreign applicants)
The following stages are involved in the admissions process for the Ph.D. program of IME Department, IIT Kanpur.
STAGE1: Apply if you meet the eligibility criteria
An applicant may apply provided he/she meets the following eligibility criteria.
(A) Applicants with a master’s degree in Management/ Industrial Engineering/ Operations Research or any other relevant discipline in engineering/ technology with a minimum of 55% marks or 5.5 CPI (on a 10 point scale). OR
(B) Applicants with a bachelor's degree in engineering/technology with a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI and a valid GATE score. The requirement of GATE score is waived if the degree is from the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). OR
(C) Applicants with a master's degree in science/arts/commerce with
Applicants with M.Sc. degree from CFTIs having a minimum 70% marks or 7.0 CPI are also eligible to apply without JRF/GATE. A student in his/her final semester may also apply provided the above eligibility criteria are met at the time of admission.
Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have passed the basic qualifying degree as
stated above are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI and will be considered for admission.

STAGE2: Shortlisting of the applicants
The short-listing of applicants for the written test will be based on academic record as well as work experience and the total number of approved seats as well as the number of applicants in each category. Only eligible and completed applications will be considered for short-listing. A committee in-charge of Ph.D. admission will prepare the shortlists. A separate short list for each category will be prepared. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee short-listing for the written test. Only suitable applicants (to be judged by the Ph.D. admission committee) will be called for the written test. |
STAGE3: Written test and Personal Interview
In order to prepare a merit list for selection, the department will conduct a written aptitude test for the shortlisted applicants. After the written test, a separate shortlist for each category will be prepared, based on which, the personal interview for the applicants will be conducted. Only those who pass the written test will be interviewed. The panels conducting the personal interview will evaluate the academic background of the applicant, his/her general academic proficiency, academic & related publications and such related matters. |
STAGE4: Selection List Preparation
A merit list will be prepared based on the applicant’s performance in the written test and the personal interview. Aggregation of marks for the eligible applicants (those who were interviewed) will be as per the weights given below.

Applicants belonging to different categories (GN, OBC, SC, ST, (PH)) will be separately merit listed. The cut
offs for different categories will be decided by the committee-in-charge for Ph.D. admissions of the IME
department of IIT Kanpur. The approved norms on reservation (OBC: 27%, SC: 15%, ST: 7.5% and PH 3% horizontal
across GN, SC, ST and OBC) will be observed. Please check the latest approved norms of eligibility for
reservation. |

What are the format of SC/ST, OBC and Person with disabilty certificates? IIT- Kanpur employes a centralized standard format of certificate for reserved category students.
Those students who have applied in the reserved category (SC/ST/OBC/PD),
should bring with them the appropriate certificate in that prescribed format when they come for the written test.
