On September 17th 2024, Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan MP, officially opened the University of Melbourne’s first Melbourne Global Centre in New Delhi. University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global Culture & Engagement Professor Michael Wesley, University of Melbourne Provost Professor Nicola Phillips, Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green and University of Melbourne Assistant Deputy Vice Chancellor International Muthupandian Ashokkumar also graced the occasion. This represents a significant advancement in enhancing educational, research, and industrial ties between India and Australia. The Melbourne Global Centre is designed to strengthen partnerships in India for sustainable impact, rather than functioning as a teaching campus.

Professor Bushra Ateeq, Dean of International Relations at IIT Kanpur, joined University leaders, and government officials. Professor Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Culture & Engagement at the University of Melbourne, highlighted the Centre's role in deepening collaborations with India, building on over 16 years of partnership.

Situated in the heart of New Delhi's central government district, the Centre will facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange across education, research, industry, and the community, serving as the University's central hub in India. Additionally, the Centre will feature cultural programs, art exhibitions, and lecture series, serving as a platform to connect research with Indian corporations, industry partners and academic institutions.
