Welcome to the Department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS) at IIT Kanpur!

The establishment of DSDS in June 2026 marks an important milestone in the history of IIT Kanpur and reflects the growing significance of the Statistical Sciences in an increasingly data-driven world. The Department traces its roots to the renowned Probability and Statistics Group that flourished within the erstwhile Department of Mathematics and Statistics and made nationally and internationally recognized contributions to research, education, and the development of the statistical sciences in India.

Generations of faculty members, students, researchers, and alumni have contributed to building this rich tradition. The creation of DSDS provides an opportunity to carry this legacy forward while embracing the new challenges and opportunities emerging from data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related disciplines.

Our mission is to foster excellence in research, education, and innovation while promoting interdisciplinary collaborations that address important scientific, technological, industrial, and societal challenges.
