Important Notifications
  • PG students of the Y25 batch (Winter Admission) are required to report in-person to the institute on 30th of December 2025 (Reporting Day) between 9 am and 6 pm.
  • Reporting venue will be updated closer to the dates of reporting.
  • Accommodation in the Hall of Residences (Hostels) will be allocated to students on reporting.
  • Parents or guardians are welcome to accompany the students; however, please note that we do not provide or arrange accommodation for them. They are welcome to spend time with their wards in the halls from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and may have meals in the mess on a payment basis. We kindly ask that parents leave the halls by 8:00 pm.

  • If a PG student does not want to avail the hostel facility of IITK, they can apply to be a day scholar. More details are on the 'Hall Allocation' tab.
  • Kanpur is currently experiencing extremely cold weather. Please check the weather forecast; plan your trip and attire accordingly. Formal attire at IIT Kanpur is not essential, and it is advisable to carry enough winter cloths.
  • The hostel rooms will be equipped with only basic furniture, including beds, chairs, tables, and cupboards. However, mattresses, pillows, blankets, and other materials will not be provided. The campus has two shopping complexes and food courts, and all halls have their own stationary, photocopy, and other related shops. You can buy materials, if you want to travel light, from these shops, including bicycles, with reasonable prices. Toilets are equipped with geysers, and there are several washing machines available for use in each hall.
  • IIT Kanpur have canteens and messes. Students can eat there from 30th December. Parents can use these on a payment basis. IIT Kanpur also has a Health Center and a pharmacy, both of which are open and in service 24/7.
  • After in-person reporting, students are required to stay in the halls or on campus and are not allowed to leave. They must spend the nights only in their allocated halls. This instruction is part of the institute's office order and is strictly enforced. Parents are allowed to spend time with the students in their rooms, irrespective of gender, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. All parents and guardians must leave the hall premises by 8:00 pm and the campus by 10:00 pm. Cars, including Ola and Uber, can enter the campus with a valid registration number and license.
  • The campus has several banks, including the branches SBI, ICICI, UBI, and HDFC. For more information, you can contact the SBI and ICICI managers at IIT Kanpur via email at sbi.01161@sbi.co.in and gaurav.varma@icicibank.com, respectively. Additional information on the banks is available on the Institute Counselling Service Website. Finally, have a safe trip.   • All Y25 students need to register on the anti-ragging portal at its official website. The reference ID generated after registration is extremely important and must be noted down, as it is required for further stages. The instruction PDF is attached here for your reference.

  • In-person reporting dates for all Y25 PG (M.Tech, MSR, PhD, MDes, MSc Dual Degree etc.) Winter Admission students are 30/12/2025, and the timing of reporting is between 9AM and 6PM at IIT Kanpur.
Document Checklist
 Offer Letter.
 Receipt of online fees payment.
 Degree Certificate/Provisional Certificate. [Please note that you must complete all the requirements for the qualifying degree before joining the institute. These requirements include any project viva or thesis viva. If your final result is awaited, then the deadline for submission of the final result/certificate will be within 8 weeks of your joining the Institute. In case you fail to submit the final result or certificate by this date, your admission may be cancelled with immediate effect.]
 The mark sheet/grade card of the qualifying examination.
 High/Secondary School Certificate of the Board/University specifying the date of birth.
 Three copies of recent (not older than 2 weeks) passport size photographs.
 SC/ST/DAP Certificates issued by a competent authority, and valid EWS/OBC-NCL Certificates issued on or after April 01, 2025, wherever relevant.
 Score card and admit card of GATE/NET/JRF/CSIR/JEST/Others (as the case may be).
 Sponsored, Part-time, and External students must bring a No-Objection Certificate from the employer. Others should bring a No-Objection Certificate or relieving certificate from the employer, if they were working at the time of application.

The documents (originals of all documents such as degree/provisional, caste certificate, etc.) verification date will be communicated by DoAA office.

Please carry the photocopies and originals of your offer letter and a government issued ID card. This needs to be shown at the reporting center.

By Air

The most popular air route to IIT Kanpur is through Lucknow Airport (IATA: LKO | ICAO: VILK). Lucknow is connected by direct flights to and from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru
Note: Kanpur airport (Chakeri) is now open to civilian purpose. The Airport is located around 21 Km from IITK and cabs are available to and fro.

 

By Road

Kanpur is connected to NH-2 that runs between Amritsar and Kolkata and connecting cities like Delhi, Agra, Allahabad, Patna. Kanpur is also connected to Lucknow on NH25 and is about 91 km from Lucknow. Cabs are available from Lucknow to reach IIT Kanpur.

By Train

Kanpur is well connected by railway network with nearly every major city. Numerous overnight trains are also present from major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. IIT Kanpur is about 17 km from the Kanpur Central Railway Station.
Direct buses to campus front gate are there from Jhakarkati. Tempos and Autos are also available which take about Rs. 200 - Rs. 250 from Station to IITK campus. One can also find shared auto services (commonly known as Vikram) for as low as 40 Rupees from Kanpur Railway Station, outside Platform 9 to campus front gate.
Metro services are also available from Kanpur Central Metro Station to IIT Kanpur Metro Station from 6am to 10pm daily.

Hall Allocation

Accommodation in the Hall of Residences (hostels) will be allocated to students on the reporting day, 30th December 2025, immediately after reporting.

The reporting help desk numbers will be updated here a night before the reporting.

PG students who want to be day scholars, i.e., do not want to stay in the hostels, may apply for the same by writing an email to head_cmhw@iitk.ac.in keeping oic2_dosa@iitk.ac.in CC on or before 27th December 2025, 12:00 noon.

Orientation Programme
Your first step into IITK

The Orientation Programme is organised to acquaint the students with the institute and to facilitate a smooth transition into life at the Institute.
The prospect of beginning life at a college can be daunting. You must be incredibly excited to come to the campus but at the same time you may also feel nervous and unsure about what to expect. Everyone has such mixed emotions and the Orientation program is designed to make your transition to IITK as seamless as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The answers to the following questions are specifically for Y25 PG students admitted to IIT Kanpur. Please note that some processes and information provided below are subject to change depending on the situation. We will update and highlight any changes in the sections below.

    Ans. The official in-person reporting dates for all Y25 PGs (MTech, MSR, MBA, PhD, MDes, MSc, MSc-PhD dual degree) are December 30th, 2025, from 9 am to 6 pm. The exact venue within the IIT Kanpur campus will be communicated closer to the reporting dates.

    Ans. Student entry is allowed from December 30th, 8:00 am onwards and will be monitored by the Institute Security office. Please carry your offer letter and a photo identity card. If you are using a car (own or rental), it must have a valid registration and driver's license. Hostel rooms will be allotted at the time of reporting, and students can start staying in their allotted rooms after reporting. No accommodation will be provided for those arriving before the 30th.

    Ans. Hostel rooms for new PG students are allocated by the office of the Center for Mental Health & Well-being, IIT Kanpur. You will be informed of your allotted hostel and room after verification at the reporting desk on 30th December.

    Ans. Parents or guardians are welcome to accompany the Y25 PG students, but we do not provide or arrange accommodation for them. They may stay with their wards in the halls from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and can have meals in the mess/canteens on a payment basis. Parents are kindly requested to leave the campus by 10:00 pm.

    Ans. It is not mandatory for your parents to accompany you.

    Ans. PG students, who want to be day scholars, i.e., do not want to stay in the hostel, may write an email for the same to head_cmhw@iitk.ac.in, keeping oic2_dosa@iitk.ac.in as cc on or before 27th December, 2025, 12:00 noon. Please mention the following in your application:

    Please note that all such students still have to report on 30th December and attend the orientation program.

    Ans. If you are unable to report on December 30th, 2025, please inform us beforehand by emailing pg_cmhw@iitk.ac.in, also by mailing your respective DPGC convenor (the list of DPGC convenors is here) and pgdesk@iitk.ac.in/admissiondesk@iitk.ac.in for smooth operations. We will share your hall number, and you should go directly to the assigned hall for accommodation. You must handle all procedures on your own if you report after December 30th, 2025, and may miss crucial events. Note the date of registration in academic calendar.

    Ans. No. All Y25 PG students will be allotted shared rooms for the first year.

    Ans. No. Reporting, orientation, and registration are different events. Reporting involves allotting your hostels. Orientation includes important events and talks necessary for your PG journey. Registration involves payment of fees, filling up several online forms, selecting your courses for the semester and biometric registration. The CMHW PG team will guide you after reporting.

    Ans. Registration details are given in the academic calendar. CMHW PG team will guide you after reporting on 30th December.

    Ans. The schedule will be released after reporting. Attendance at all orientation events and sessions is mandatory for new PG students. As part of the orientation program, you will also have your DPGC meeting, with venue and time details shared after reporting.

    Ans. Course pre-registration involves choosing and requesting the courses you wish to take in the first semester. The DPGC meeting will assist you in selecting the courses.

    Ans. Late registration can be approved by SPGC with genuine reasons (clause 4.1 of PG manual). Late registration (with applicable fine) date is mentioned in the academic calendar.

    Ans. Minimum CGPA requirements will be discussed in the DPGC meeting during orientation.

    Ans. Detailed course requirements and department policies will be communicated during the DPGC meeting. Refer to the PG manual for more information.

    Ans. Student guides are senior IIT Kanpur students assigned to help incoming students with their academic journey. They will assist with all doubts and concerns after arriving on campus.

    Ans. Yes, the medical certificate must be filled out before coming to campus by a registered medical practitioner (government or private) using the format provided by IITK.

    Ans. The medical certificate is valid if generated after receiving the offer letter. It must be made by a registered medical practitioner using the institute's format.

    Ans. Any Indian bank account in your name will work for stipend release. The procedures will be initiated after reporting, and instructions will be provided.

    Ans. Webmail refers to the official IITK email (...@iitk.ac.in). All students will receive an IITK email, and all communications will be sent to this email. Instructions for opening and registering for the IITK email will be shared closer to the reporting dates.

    Ans. Having a bicycle is recommended due to the large distances you will commute daily. Cycle shops will be available on campus.
