Vision

The Kotak School of Sustainability at IIT Kanpur envisions advancing global sustainability through pioneering research, transformative education, and innovative solutions. We aim to provide leadership in sustainability and prepare future generations to build resilient systems and technologies for a sustainable future.

Impact

We are driving impact across clean energy, climate science, ecological restoration, and sustainable development. Through pioneering research, innovative technologies, and policy engagement, KSS is building knowledge and solutions for India’s clean energy transition. With six dedicated centers, global collaborations, and breakthrough academic programmes, KSS is shaping leadership and capacity for a sustainable future.

Dean

Prof. Sachchida Nand Tripathi is the inaugural Dean of the Kotak School of Sustainability at IIT Kanpur, and Professor in the Departments of Civil Engineering and Sustainable Energy Engineering.

A pioneer in air quality monitoring and management technologies, he led the creation of India’s largest sensor-based air quality network, now adopted by multiple cities and states to inform clean air policies. His work spans aerosol–cloud interactions, climate change, AI/ML-enabled source apportionment, and low-cost sensors, with direct influence on national environmental policy.

He leads the Centre of Excellence for Air Quality Monitoring (ATMAN) and the Government of India’s first AI Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cities, driving innovations in energy optimisation, real-time pollution control, urban mobility, and waste management.

Recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, J.C. Bose National Fellowship, and Infosys Prize 2023, Prof. Tripathi is a Fellow of INSA, INAE, and NASI. An IIT BHU, MNIT, and University of Reading alumnus, he has guided over 20 Ph.D. theses, mentored multiple start-ups, and continues to advance sustainability through cutting-edge research, technology deployment, and capacity building.
