About the Program
The IITK Research Internship in Science & Engineering (RISE) is a program for foreign undergraduate and graduate students to engage in meaningful research at IIT Kanpur. Students selected for the program will get the opportunity to work (in an online or in-person mode) on a research problem under the guidance of an IITK faculty mentor.
This program is only for foreign (non-Indian) students.
Program Period
Winter Internship (Online): 1-31 December 2025
Summer Internship (Offline): For 6-8 weeks between 1 May 2026 to 31 July 2026
Number of Participants
For the winter internship, the total number of participants will depend upon the positions available with faculty.
For the offline summer internship, IITK will support up to 12 students.
Eligibility
- Applicants should be non-Indian nationals
- Must be enrolled in a bachelors or masters program at their Home University
- Students should have at least one semester left in their study after the internship at IITK
- Have a strong academic record and an interest in research
- Meet the requirements of the chosen project, as mentioned in the project list
- Should be comfortable with the English language
Additional Criteria for the Summer Internship:
- UG students should have completed at least four semesters and masters students should have completed at least two semesters before the beginning of the internship
Support from IITK (for offline summer internship)
- Air-conditioned boarding facility on a twin-sharing basis
- Monthly stipend of INR 15,000 for the duration of the internship
- Taxi pick-up from Lucknow/Kanpur airport
Costs to be Covered by the Students
- Access to hi-speed internet (for the online winter internship)
- Travel from their Home country to Lucknow or Kanpur airport
- Visa costs
- Health insurance
- Food and other living costs (for the duration of the in-person summer internship)
Application Period
- Winter internship: September-October 2025
- Summer internship: February 2026
Application Process
- When the application process opens, a list of the available research projects/faculty for both winter and summer internships will be shared on the website.
- Each student can apply for up to two projects through the RISE Application Google form along with the required documents (mentioned below)
- The applications will be reviewed by the faculty who may choose to conduct online interviews
- Final results will be conveyed to the selected students by the Office of International Relations

- Statement of Purpose (400 words max)
- CV
- Official academic records/transcripts from Home University (translated into English, if applicable)
- Proof of nationality (Indian nationals are not eligible)
- Letter of recommendation
- Passport size photo
