A.) Arrival by air:

Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (LKO), Lucknow is the nearest international airport and located about 90 Km. from IIT Kanpur. It has direct flight connection to all major cities of India. Upon arrival, You can hire prepaid taxis at the airport (Ola outstation is also available). The typical cost will be around Rs.2500 for sedan-type taxis (around Rs. 1600 for Ola outstation). It takes about two and a half hours to drive from the Lucknow airport to the IITK campus.

Kanpur also has an airport (KNU) with limited flights. Kanpur airport is about 25 km from IIT Kanpur, and it takes about 1 hour to reach campus. The charges are about Rs. 1200-1500. Ola/Uber cab service is also available in Kanpur.

Delhi is the adjoining major airport (DEL) which has flights to all Indian cities along with important foreign destinations. Delhi airport is located about 450 km from the city of Kanpur. Flights from Delhi to Kanpur are also available. There is also frequent train connection between Delhi and Kanpur.

B.) Arrival by train:

Kanpur Central Railway station (CNB) is one of the busiest railway stations in the country. It is located on the Delhi-Kolkata train route and all major trains between these cities usually pass through and stop at Kanpur. One can easily get regular trains to Kanpur from other major cities of the country.

  • Please exit from Platform number 1 (called the Cantonment side).
  • IIT Kanpur is located about 16 km from the Kanpur Central Railway Station.
  • It is possible to hire taxis (about Rs. 500) and auto rickshaws (about Rs.250) to IITK campus from the station. It takes about 40 minutes to drive from Kanpur Central Railway station to IIT Kanpur.
Taxi operator:
  • There are some taxi operators who provide services on the approved rate of IIT Kanpur. One can contact the department office for further assistance.
    The rates are as follows:
    • Lucknow airport to IIT Kanpur (sedan type cars): Rs. 2500 (including toll tax and parking).
    • Kanpur railway station to IIT Kanpur: Rs. 650 (including parking)
  • Ola/ Uber-type taxi operators are available in Kanpur.
Arrival in IIT Kanpur campus:
  • One should reach at the ‘main gate’ of IIT Kanpur. At the entrance to the campus, you need to stop at the security checkpoint, which is managed by campus security.
  • Let them know that you are here to visit Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and they will allow you. Department of Mathematics and Statistics is located at the 5th floor of the Faculty Building. It is about 1.5 Km from the main entrance gate of IIT Kanpur.

At present there are 76 Ph.D scholars enrolled in the Mathematics and Statistics department.

  • Faculty recruitment: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, invites applications for faculty positions from bright and promising candidates in all areas of mathematics and statistics. Applicants with areas of interest that are related to the research groups here are strongly encouraged to apply.

The recruitment process involves discusssion of the appropriateness of the application to the research groups here, along with an assessment of the candidate's publications by the different groups. If the candidate's application is found suitable then he/she is invited for a talk along with interaction with the faculty here. Only after there has been positive feedback from the department, is the candidate's application processed further for discussion at the institute level. The applicants are then short-listed for an interview based on the recommendations of the department and the institute level committee. The final selecetion is made by a selection committee consisting of experts.

The department has 49 faculty, 12 post-docs and 2 inspire faculty currently.

Research
  • Inititation Grant: The institute provides a minimum initiation grant of Rs. 3 lakhs. The grant from the institute can be as high as Rs. 22 lakhs, depending on a research proposal.
  • International/national Conference Travel Support:
    • The institute provides support for international/national travel for academic activities via Cumulative Professional Development Allowance (CPDA).
      Reimbursement of travel and other expenses related to participating in national/international conferences, research visits, invited lectures, workshops, summer- and winter schools,
  • Other research expenses:  Paying membership fees of various professional bodies, Purchase of books/monographs/journal subscriptions/computer software/data bases, Meeting various contingency expenses as per approved norms, Reimbursement of telephone/mobile charges. It is also allowed to be used for purchase of Electronic Books (E-Books), the license of the e- book will be entered in Department CPDA Stock registers.
Teaching and Work Environment
  • Low teaching load: Each faculty is expected to teach at most 2 courses per year, that is an average of 4 contact hours per week. Besides, one takes a tutorial in either semester.
  • Attractive Pay Package: IIT pay packages are better than other colleges/institutes in India. IIT Kanpur normally gives additional increments to deserving candidates. All the perks given to central government employee are also given (e.g., PF, LTC, Medical, etc.). Relocation expenses are also covered by the institute subject to some limits.
  • Additional Top-Up: The institute also provides an additional top-up salary of Rs 25,000 per month for the first three years service.
  • Flexible Leave rules: IIT Kanpur has one of the most flexible leave rules. A faculty member can get two months of vacation every year, sabbatical every six years, and short-term and long-term leave to temporarily work at other places. Short-term leave is for 1 semester, and can be availed after every two semesters. Long-term leave is for upto two years, and can be availed after every five years.
  • On-campus living:
    • All faculty members get spacious housing on the campus, which provides pollution-free and safe environment for family with 24-hour power (very rare power outages on campus) and water supply.
    • Every house has an internal telephone connection with ADSL connectivity to the Internet.
    • We have a self-contained campus with a shopping center, hospital, schools, library, restaurant, swimming pool, gym etc.
    • We also have an active faculty club and women's association.
