In the unprecedented situation due to COVID-19 outbreak, we are not conducting the written test for the PhD admission test in Mathematics and Statistics for 2020-21, Semester-I, admissions. We will conduct online interviews of shortlisted candidates on July 6-7, 2020 (the backup date : July 10, 2020) for the PhD admission in Mathematics and Statistics. The following shortlisting criteria will be used for shortlisting candidates for online interviews:

Shortlisting criteria for Ph.D. Mathematics online interviews :

  1. An applicant having INSPIRE PhD fellowship and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.
  2. An applicant having NBHM PhD fellowship and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.
  3. An applicant having a master's degree in Mathematics from IITs with CPI more than or equal to 8.0 will be shortlisted. For result awaited applicants, the CPI till the end of the third semester will be considered.
  4. An applicant having a valid GATE score (in Mathematics) more than or equal to cutoff set by the screening/selection committee and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.
  5. An applicant having a valid CSIR-UGC NET (fellowship) rank/score (in Mathematical Science) more than or equal to cutoff set by the screening/selection committee and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.

Shortlisting criteria for Ph.D. Statistics online interviews :

  1. An applicant having INSPIRE PhD fellowship and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.
  2. An applicant having a master's degree in Statistics/Mathematics from IITs with CPI more than or equal to 8.0 will be shortlisted. For result awaited applicants, the CPI till the end of the third semester will be considered.
  3. An applicant having a valid GATE score (in Statistics/Mathematics) more than or equal to cutoff set by the screening/selection committee and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.
  4. Note : If an applicant has valid GATE scores in both Statistics and Mathematics, the maximum of them will be considered.
  5. An applicant having a valid CSIR-UGC NET (fellowship) rank/score (in Mathematical Science) more than or equal to cutoff set by the screening/selection committee and at least 60% marks in the last qualifying degree will be shortlisted.

Note : If any applicant fails to submit the required documents, then the applicant's candidature will be cancelled.

Note : The minimum marks in the last qualifying degree for the applicants under OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, PwD categories will be as per the current Government of India rules regarding the same.

Note : The last qualifying degree could be a 2-year Master's degree or a 4-year Bachelor's degree in any subject of science or any subject of engineering or Economic Sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at IIT Kanpur offers separate Ph.D. programs in Mathematics and Statistics.
