Some days feel manageable. Others feel heavy for no clear reason. Mental health is about how we think, feel, cope, and show up in our daily lives.
It’s not about being happy all the time—it’s about being able to deal with what life throws at us, and knowing when to ask for support. You’re doing okay on paper—classes, deadlines, conversations. But inside, you feel tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix.
That's not laziness.
That's not a weakness.
That's your mental health asking for attention.
What Mental Health Is (and Isn't)
- Dynamic and changeable (a continuum)
- Something everyone has
- Worth caring about
- A weakness
- Only about illness
- Something you "outgrow"
Why does an IITK student need to worry?
According to WHO, more than a billion people live with a mental health condition—that is almost 1 out of 8 people. As students, we are all here for learning, but learning doesn’t happen in isolation from our emotional wellbeing.
Mental health lies at the Center of our academic performance, personal growth, and social life. Good mental health helps us:
- Focus better on academics
- Pursue goals with clarity
- Engage meaningfully in extracurriculars
- Build healthy relationships
- Cope with uncertainty, stress, and sadness
To put it simply, living a good life at IITK is not only about intelligence but wellbeing.
What affects our Mental Health?
None of these make you weak. They make you human.
- Carrying the burden of extremely high expectations from self, family or peers.
- Constant comparison with other students regarding academics, research, or social life.
- Struggling to adjust in a new environment far from home.
- Anxiety about internship, placements, or research goals.
- Overuse of social media.
- Skipping meals and sleep to keep up with the competition.
- A sense of not having enough emotional support.
- Adjusting to diverse cultural backgrounds among students.
- Genetic factors
Breaking the Myths
These are some common myths around the campus, but seeking help is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of bravery.
- "Everyone here seems pretty smart, so they must be fine!"
- "Seeking help makes me weak in the eyes of my peers."
- "If I am at IITK, I should be able to handle everything by myself."
- "Good CPI = Good Mental Health."
- "Counselling and therapy are only for serious cases."
When and Where to reach out?
Falling academics, breakups, loneliness, feeling left out, or going through anxiety—there are times when things can seem overwhelming. But remember, this too shall pass.
If you feel that talking to your friends or family might help, you should surely give it a go. But if you feel that friends are unable to support you, it is always recommended to reach out for professional help.
The Center for Mental Health and Wellbeing is always there for you. We have professional counsellors, psychiatrists, and an empathetic student team who are always ready to help. You are just one call or text away.
"Life at IITK is not a battlefield, nor a valley of flowers, but an ever-flowing river where everyone must find their own flow."
