Students’ Benevolent Fund (SBF) Scholarship
Scholarship program providing financial assistance to students facing
economic hardships at IIT Kanpur.
1. About the SBF Scholarship
The Students’ Benevolent Fund (SBF) Scholarship is a financial assistance program at IIT Kanpur designed to support students who are experiencing financial hardship and are not beneficiaries of any other scholarship or fellowship.
Key Features
- Monthly assistance of approximately ₹2,000
- Disbursed for 9 months in an academic year
- Can be availed for a maximum of 3 years
- Not contingent upon a prescribed CPI cutoff
- Students may reapply each academic year, subject to eligibility
2. Eligibility Criteria
The SBF Scholarship is open to:
- Undergraduate (UG) students
- MSc students
- Dual Degree students
Important Notes
- Students currently receiving any other scholarship or fellowship are not eligible
- Acceptance of SBF may require return of other financial assistance, if applicable
- Dual Degree students transitioning to MTech/MS programs are not eligible
3. Application Timeline & Process
- The application process is tentatively expected to begin around 3rd January, 2026
- Applications will be submitted through the Student Academic Portal
- Only complete and accurate applications will be considered
4. Mandatory Documents (Read Carefully)
To apply for the SBF Scholarship, students must keep the following documents ready:
Student Documents
- Student’s Aadhaar Card
- Student’s PAN Card
Family / Parent Documents (Mandatory)
- Parents’ PAN Card (Mandatory even if the parent is a homemaker or non-earning)
- Family Annual Income Certificate
OR - Parents’ Income Tax Return (ITR) / AIS
Other Sources of Income
Supporting documents must be provided for any additional income, including pension, rental, agricultural, business, or other income sources, as applicable.
Important Clarifications
- PAN Card and AIS/ITR are mandatory in all cases
- Homemaker or non-earning status does not exempt submission of PAN or AIS/ITR
- Applications without these documents may be rejected
Special Case: Deceased Parent
- The only exception where PAN/AIS/ITR may not be collected is when a parent is deceased
- In such cases, students may be required to upload:
- Death Certificate of their parent
- PAN Card and AIS/ITR of the surviving parent or legal guardian, as applicable
5. Selection Process
- Applications undergo scrutiny and shortlisting
- Scholarship allocation is based on individual financial need
- Submission of incorrect or incomplete information may result in disqualification
