IIT Kanpur Showcases Sporting Excellence at Inter IIT Students’ and Staff Sports Meets 2025

Kanpur, January 08, 2026: IIT Kanpur showcased exemplary sporting excellence at the recently concluded 58th Inter IIT Students’ Sports Meet 2025 and the 30th Inter IIT Staff Sports Meet 2025, reaffirming the Institute’s strong commitment to sports and physical education. The student contingent secured an overall 5th position, with the Men’s Contingent achieving an impressive overall 3rd place. The staff contingent also delivered a commendable performance, finishing 4th overall with several podium finishes across disciplines.

The 58th Inter IIT Students’ Sports Meet 2025, jointly hosted by IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, and IIT Tirupati, witnessed enthusiastic participation from IITs across the country. IIT Kanpur was represented by a contingent of 185 students who competed across multiple sporting disciplines with dedication and perseverance. The Institute recorded several notable podium finishes, particularly in athletics. Ms. Karishma Singh won the Silver Medal in the 100 m Hurdles (Women), while Ms. Sameira R. Nair secured the Bronze Medal in the same event. Mr. Anukalp Rai earned the Silver Medal in the 110 m Hurdles (Men). Ms. Karishma Singh further delivered a landmark performance by winning the Gold Medal in the Long Jump (Women) and setting a new Inter IIT record with a jump of 4.99 m, surpassing the previous record of 4.86 m. The athletics team was coached by Mr. Deepak Dhanowa.

In team events, the Men’s Hockey team, coached by Mr. Rajat Singh Tomar, delivered an outstanding performance to clinch the Gold Medal. The Men’s Lawn Tennis team, under the guidance of Mr. Anurag Mishra, secured the Silver Medal, while the Women’s Squash team, coached by Mr. Ansh Gupta, also won the Silver Medal. The Men’s Basketball team, coached by Mr. Pradeep Mishra, earned the Bronze Medal, and the Women’s Basketball team finished in fourth position. In Table Tennis, both the Men’s and Women’s teams, coached by Mr. Anmol Deep Chandra, secured Bronze Medals. Weightlifting contributed significantly to the Institute’s medal tally, with Mr. Dhruv Shetty winning the Gold Medal in the 79 kg category and Mr. Sabavath Venkatesh securing the Silver Medal in the 65 kg category, under the guidance of Mr. Kuldeep Sharma. Additionally, at the 39th Inter IIT Aquatics Meet 2025 held at IIT Madras, the IIT Kanpur Water Polo team, coached by Mr. Vivek Rao Vadi, won the Bronze Medal.

All other student teams advanced to the pre-quarterfinal or quarterfinal stages in their respective events, reflecting the overall depth and competitiveness of IIT Kanpur’s sporting contingent. The Men’s Contingent’s Overall 3rd position stands as a testament to the Institute’s sustained excellence in sports.

In parallel, the 30th Inter IIT Staff Sports Meet 2025, jointly hosted by IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, and IIT Tirupati, concluded on December 29, 2025, at IIT Hyderabad. IIT Kanpur’s staff contingent delivered a commendable performance, securing an overall 4th position. The men’s squash team emerged as champions, winning the Gold Medal, while the men’s basketball team secured Bronze. Prof. Navrose has been a standout in the squash series. In athletics, Prof Debopam Das won Bronze in the 100 m run, and Dr Vijaianand S. K. secured Bronze in the 5000 m run. Ms Anjani Dubey stood out in women’s athletics, winning Gold in discus throw, Silver in javelin throw, and Silver in shotput, while Ms Renu Verma won the Bronze in javelin throw. The women’s 4x100 m relay team also secured a Bronze Medal. The men’s teams secured fourth position in football, volleyball, and 4x100 m relay. Also, Mr Manish Sahu and Mr Deepak Dhanowa secured fourth positions in 1500m run and hammer throw, respectively. The women’s teams secured fourth position in badminton, table tennis with Ms Renu Verma securing fourth position in long jump.

Most staff teams advanced to the semifinals, and the cricket team progressed to the quarterfinals, reflecting consistent performance and competitive spirit across events.

The institute acknowledges the guidance and support of Prof. Rahul Mangal, Chairperson of the Sports and Physical Education Committee (SPEC), Prof. Srinivas Dharavath, Chairperson of the Staff Gymkhana, and extends special thanks to Mr. Tahseen Akhtar for his proactive coordination and assistance. The institute also appreciates the entire contingent and the Student and Staff Gymkhana teams for upholding discipline and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

IIT Kanpur extends its sincere congratulations to all students and staff athletes, coaches, and support teams for their dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship, which brought pride to the institute. While certain challenges were encountered, both meetings provided valuable insights and learning opportunities. With continued collective effort and institutional support, IIT Kanpur remains confident of achieving even stronger performances in future editions.
