At IIT Kanpur, we have a strong focus on internationalization – every year, we welcome many foreign faculty and students to IIT Kanpur as well as facilitate the visits of IIT Kanpur faculty and students to universities abroad.
IIT Kanpur is a leading public institution for technical education in India and has consistently been ranked amongst the top 5 engineering institutes in India since its inception in 1959. It offers courses not only in engineering but also in sciences, humanities, management and medicine, giving students an exposure to interdisciplinary education.
Guidelines for Admission of Foreign Students to Post-Graduate Programs
Degree Programs

Applicants can apply to IIT Kanpur through the online admission portal when the admissions are open.

Students applying through government-aided programs shall apply at the website of those programs. To know more about them, click here.

Postgraduate admissions at IIT Kanpur are conducted twice every year for Ph.D. (Fall and Spring semester) and once for M.Tech./MS/MBA (Fall semester).

On receiving the applications, the concerned Departments will conduct their respective admission processes which may include an interview of the applicants.

On the basis of the recommendations of the Department and other administrative authorities, offer letters will be sent out to the selected students.

Once the student has accepted the offer of admission, they will be required to submit the fees and complete their academic registration. The Office of International Relations (OIR) will assist the student in this process.

Once the student has arrived on campus, OIR will also help them with the required Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) registration and other mandatory procedures.
Non-Degree Program

To visit IIT Kanpur on an exchange program, students will first need to confirm that their Home University has a partnership with IIT Kanpur for a student exchange. To do so, please check our list of active semester exchange partnerships here.

Students from Partner Universities wishing to come to IIT Kanpur for a semester exchange will need to complete the Application Form for Non-Degree Students and send it to oir@iitk.ac.in. Students will also be required to furnish a list of courses (from the ones offered that semester) they are interested in while on semester exchange at IIT Kanpur.
