Skill Development Program under PMKVY 4.0 Begins at IIT Kanpur

Kanpur, 11 March 2026: The PMKVY 4.0 skilling program on “Assistant Machinist – Iron and Steel” has commenced at the Imagineering Laboratory of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, with active participation from the 4-i Lab, Central Workshop, and the Tinkering Laboratory.

Aligned with the Government of India's vision for Viksit Bharat, this initiative marks one of the first large-scale skill development programs conducted at IIT Kanpur. Through this program, interested students will receive state-of-the-art training and practical exposure in technologies related to precision manufacturing systems.

The course has been designed as an extensive 420-hour training program, which will run for 70 days, withsix hours of training each day. Through this initiative, the institute plans to train approximately 360 students in phases, thereby contributing significantly to the development of a skilled workforce for advanced manufacturing industries.

Under this program, the following skill development courses will be conducted in phases: Iron & Steel – Assistant Machinist, Robotics and Automation – COBOTS Engineer,andAdvanced Mechatronics Engineer. In thefirst phase, around 40 candidates from Kanpur have registered for theAssistant Machinist – Iron and Steelcourse.

The program is being conducted with the support and encouragement of the Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, and the Dean of Research and Development, Tarun Gupta.

The course is being coordinated by Bishakh Bhattacharya and Dr. Amandeep Singh Oberoi, who are overseeing the academic and technical execution of the training program.

The program offers hands-on training in additive and subtractive machining, along with traditional and advanced metal cutting processes, ensuring that trainees gain industry-relevant skills and practical experience.

This initiative aims tostrengthen the technical competence and employability of students in the manufacturing sector across India. Through this training program, the institute envisions creating a strong ecosystem for next-generation manufacturing and automation industries.

The dissemination of engineering knowledge and technical skills for the growth and progress of the nation remains the core motto of the initiative.
