Soundness Test

This test measures the resistance of aggregates to disintegration due to weathering.

The aggregates are subjected to alternate cooling and heating cycles in the presence of abrasive agent (generally some chemical solution). The abrasive agent penetrates the fine crack in the aggregates. Due to repetitive drying and wetting, salts get deposited in the cracks and the cracks grow in size causing disintegration of aggregates along the weak shear plane.
