Welcome Message from HOD

I am delighted that I.I.T. Kanpur has recently established the department of Space, Planetary & Astronomical Sciences & Engineering. Given the rapid pace of development in this field and the fascination it holds for students, I personally feel that this is a welcome step. India is currently pushing for a very ambitious space program and has established several major astronomical observatories. It is also participating in several international astronomical mega-science projects. We aim to create a stimulating environment in the department so that students can participate and effectively contribute to such research and development programs.

Experiment modules consist of experiments related to electromagnetic wave detection and analyses in X-ray/optical/IR/radio bands, observing fundamental principles (interference, diffraction, coherence etc.), setting up spectroscopy and polarimetry experiments, and carrying out related measurements applicable in the field of astronomy, planetary sciences.

We are developing an Adaptive Optics (AO) test bench based on the Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor, which will be used to train students on AO and wavefront control techniques.

Workshop on satellite based particle detector to search for dark matter was held at IIT Kanpur on 27 and 28 January. The meeting was aimed at proposing a space observatory which will search for the hypothetical dark matter particle. Scientists from many institutes within India attended this workshop which was held in hybrid mode.
