Technological advances brought significant changes to organizations and industries across the globe, creating an ever-increasing demand for professionals with analytical and managerial skills combined with sound technical knowledge. Foreseeing this need, IME Department of IIT Kanpur designed its M.Tech Programme to gain and hone necessary managerial skills for engineers.
 
 

A high score in the GATE examination is the first step towards securing an admission in the program. The high scorers then appear in the Department's own tests on comprehension and quantitative skills followed by a personal interview are the only way to get admitted in the curriculum. Passing through a selection process that guarantee the best of the available talents, the students are challenged with an equally tough academic program that focus on both learning and implementation.


IME Department emphasizes on the "methods" of understanding any systems. Rather than 'spoon-feeding', students are taught basic concepts and their analytical skills are then sharpened through a series of rigorous exercises. This approach helps to build strong reasoning and analytical abilities and best prepares them to take on real-world challenges. IME Department recognizes that mere course-work will not normally make one an effective manager. It is the rigor to which the IME faculty subjects its students, which imparts in them the potential to be a top notch manager.


In addition the department is equipped with the latest tools and systems used in the industries for the students to obtain hands-on experience. Having some of the most complicated software like product life cycle management, simulation, statistical analysis, financial modelling, process design and control, etc. in the well-equipped laboratories allow the students to learn the vital skills allowing them to succeed in future; both in industry and academia.

The M.Tech program of IME (Industrial and Management Engineering) Department of IIT Kanpur has worldwide acclaim. The accolade for this acclaim can be attributed to the rigour through which the IME faculty subjects its students. Being an integral part of an institution of the stature of IIT Kanpur naturally helps the budding spark to imbibe all the values and ethos that have made it an epitome of excellence.


Our tryst with Engineering and Management started way back in 1974, when the Industrial and Management Engineering (IME) programme was initiated to teach methods to plan, design, implement and manage production and services. Our M. Tech. students take quantitative, financial and IT courses which find applications in Production Management (SCM/Logistics), Financial Engineering (Investment Research/Risk Management/Financial services) and Marketing Engineering.


With carefully designed syllabus, we keep up to the true IIT Kanpur tradition of sensitising ourselves with the latest in the industry. The M.Tech course in IME has evolved as a program for developing Managers from Engineers with cross-functional skills with special emphasis in quantitative techniques and operations. The class being a heterogeneous mix of engineers from diverse fields naturally enriches the learning environment, turning into a fountainhead of vibrant ideas.


Moreover students are given a chance to have the experience of the industry through summer internships. They have worked in Financial Risk Analytics/Portfolio Management, Business Analytics and Intelligence, Supply Chain Management as well as on ERP systems as summer interns
