Admission to M.Tech. Programme, IME Department, IITKanpur for July 2014

Eligibility Criteria for applying to the program

1. Valid Score Card of GATE-2013 and/or GATE-2014 and
2.
(a) The applicant must have a bachelors degree in engineering or a masters degree in science with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum (which is 55% or a CPI of 5.5 on a scale of 10.0).

(b) Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have passed the basic qualifying degree (bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in science), are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI and will be considered for admission.

The following stages are involved in the admissions process for the M.Tech. program, IME Department, IIT Kanpur.

STAGE1: Apply if you meet the eligibility criteria

STAGE2: Shortlisting of the applicants

A committee-in-charge for M.Tech admissions will prepare separate short lists for each category based on the following criteria.

For GN and OBC applicants

a) A GATE-2013 or GATE-2014 cut-off score as stipulated by the IME. In case a student applies w ith both the GATE-2013 and GATE-2014 scores, then GATE-2014 score will be considered.
b) Bachelors degree in engineering from any AICTE recognized institute/university, IITs, NITs or IIITs or a master's degree in science.

For SC and ST applicants

a) A GATE-2013 or GATE-2014 cut-off score as stipulated by the IME. In case a student applies with both the GATE-2013 and GATE-2014 scores, then GATE-2014 score w ill be considered.
b) Bachelors degree in engineering from any AICTE recognized institute/university, IITs, NITs or IIITs or a master's degree in science.

STAGE3: Written test and Personal Interview

(a) Written aptitude test will be conducted for all the short listed applicants. Only those candidates whose satisfy the written test cut-off will qualify to appear for the personal interview. Cut-off marks would be different for each category.
(b) A committee-in-charge for M.Tech admissions will conduct the personal interview to evaluate the suitability of the candidate for the program based on academic background of the applicant, his/her general academic proficiency, etc.

STAGE4: Merit List Preparation

A merit list would be prepared for each category b ase d on the aggregate score that is computed as follows:
(a) 70% weightage: Valid GATE Score (this would be the scaled score based on the absolute score obtained by the applicant in GATE-2013 or GATE-2014 examination).
(b) 30% weightage: Personal Interview
Applicants belonging to different categories (GN, OBC, SC, ST, (PH)) will be separately merit listed. The cut-off marks for different categories will be decided by the committee-in-charge for M.Tech admissions. The applicable norms on reservation (OBC: 27%, SC: 15%, ST: 7.5% and PH 3% horizontal across GN, SC, ST and OBC) will be observed. Please check the latest applicable norms of eligibilityforreservation.

Note

A merit list would be prepared for each category based on the aggregate score that is computed as follows:

1) Stages 2 , 3 and 4 processes for GN, OBC and SC&ST applicants will b e conducted independently. These two groups, i.e., GN, OBC and SC&ST will not be compared at any stage during the selection process.
2) For each category, a final merit list and a wait list will be prepared.
3) At any stage during the admissions process or during the M.Tech. program at IIT Kanpur, if it is found that the candidate has misrepresented, falsified or hidden relevant information, his/her candidature/admission would be summarily rejected and the candidate would have to leave the program if he/she has joined the same and no fee deposited will be refunded.

Placement Process

  • Invitations are sent to company with relevant information.

  • A Company can show their interest in recruiting from DoMS, IIT Kanpur by contacting the Department placement coordinator (DPC).

  • Company sends the duly filled Job announcement form (JAF) by post or email.

  • Date for the Pre-Placement Talk (PPT) is scheduled.

  • Companies are encouraged to send soft copy of their PPTs and Job Profile which will be uploaded on the internal site available only to the students.

  • The dates for campus interviews are allotted on basis of information provided in JAF and based on the student's ranking.

  • Interested students register for a particular company.

  • The company visits the campus on the mutually agreed date and conducts Aptitude/Technical test/Personal Interviews/Group Discussion as a part of their selection process.

  • The company is expected to furnish the final list of selected students on the same day as soon as possible after the completion of the selection process.

  • Once a student is selected in a company he/she will not be allowed to appear for other companies' interviews as per Recruitment Policy.

The MTech program is the flagship program of DoMS. It is one of the oldest to introduce industrial engineering in India. The program provides a perfect blend of industrial engineering and management science to its students. The well-defined structure of course work and a year-long thesis work provides in-depth knowledge of concepts to students. The intervening summer internships are used for practical project work in industries.


The program focuses on developing expertise in Analytics and Operations fields. It covers diverse topics from both the management and engineering paradigms. The Department of Management Sciences (DoMS) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, offers a full-time Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program. The program is spread over four semesters and a summer term. The course work includes compulsory and elective courses and a capstone project in the participants interest area. The program covers management domains like Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Economics, Operations, IT, Systems, Service Management, Public Policy, Sustainability, and Energy Policy among others.
