Research I Foundation

The Research-I Foundation, established in 2003 by Shri N. R. Narayana Murthy, Founder of Infosys Limited and a distinguished alumnus of IIT Kanpur, has been a cornerstone of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering’s research ecosystem. As a generous benefactor, his sustained support over more than two decades has significantly strengthened the department’s research output and fostered a dynamic, high-impact research environment for both faculty and students. The Foundation provides vital assistance for presenting research at international conferences, supports young faculty in advancing their research, enables B.Tech students to participate in prestigious platforms such as the ACM ICPC World Finals, and facilitates invited talks by leading researchers, among other initiatives.

Activities conducted during the FY 2024- 25

Lecture series

The Foundation conducted lectures under the “Eyes-on-Research” lecture series to promote research.

The talks included “Robust Query Processing: Where Geometry Beats” by Professor Jayant R. Haritsa (IISc, Bangalore).

“The Side Benefits of Knowing an Algorithm” by Professor Jaikumar Radhakrishnan (ICTS, Bangalore).

As part of the invited talk series, the department hosted distinguished speakers from leading international institutions.

Professor Andreas Herzig (CNRS, IRIT, France) delivered a talk titled “Reasoning About Trust”.

Professor Margaret Burnett (Oregon State University, USA) presented “To Enable Diverse Mere Mortals to Assess an AI Agent's Goodness for Their Own Needs”.

Prof. Abhranil Chatterjee, attended the CALDAM Indo-Spanish Pre-Conference School in Coimbatore.

Support for the Research of Young Faculty Members

Prof. Soumya Dutta, received support from the Research-I Foundation for travel to deliver an invited talk and organize the DPH-Vis Workshop at IEEE PacificVis 2025, and for purchasing a GPU server for his research.

Dr. Amitangshu Pal received support to purchase muscle sensors used to develop a speech interface that allows people to communicate silently without speaking.

Student Research Visits

The Research-I Foundation provided financial support to several research scholars and a senior undergraduate student from the CSE department to present their research work at international conferences. This support helped them share their findings with the global research community and gain valuable academic exposure.

Outreach Activities - Encouraging Research Aspirants for Ph.D. Programme

Prof. Adithya Vadapalli, conducted outreach visits at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, and MNNIT Prayagraj to encourage students to pursue the Ph.D. programme.

ICPC World Finals

The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is the oldest and one of the most respected global programming competitions, bringing together top student programmers from around the world. It challenges participants to showcase their algorithmic skills, problem-solving capabilities, and teamwork. A team from IIT Kanpur represented the institute at the ICPC World Finals 2023 in Luxor, Egypt (April 2024) and the ICPC World Finals 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan after qualifying through the ICPC Asia West regional contests. Participating in the World Finals provided the team an opportunity to compete with and interact with top programmers from leading universities around the world.
