Mr. Sanjay Malhotra (BT/CSE/1989), was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), with a tenure of three years. He is a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre. After completing his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kanpur, he went to do his Masters in Public Policy from Princeton University. With a career spanning over 33 years, Mr. Malhotra brings extensive experience across diverse domains such as power, finance and taxation, information technology, and mining.
Dr. Nilesh Pandey (PhD/EE/2022) was awarded the prestigious IEEE-EDS 2024 Early Career Award. This honor is given to recognize, promote, and support outstanding technical development in the field of Electron Devices Society, specifically for early-career researchers. Each year, only 2-3 exceptional researchers from around the world are selected for this prestigious recognition. Dr. Pandey is currently Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Texas at Austin.
Prof. Sandhya S. Visweswariah (MSC2/CHM/1980), esteemed alumnus of IIT Kanpur became the President-elect of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) at the 26th Ordinary General Assembly. Prof. Visweswariah obtained her bachelor's degree in Botany from the Osmania University, Hyderabad, in 1977 following which she joined IIT Kanpur to pursue her master's in Chemistry. In 1980, she started her PhD program in the Department of Biochemistry, IISc, and completed it in 1987. She was awarded the Bill and Melinda Gates Grand Challenges Explorations Grant for her proposal "A Small Animal Model of ETEC-Mediated Diarrhea".
IITK alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Mr. Rakesh Gangwal (BT/ME/1975) has been appointed as the Chairman of American carrier Southwest Airlines. After completing his B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1975, Mr. Gangwal also earned an MBA degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
IITK Young Alumnus Awardee, Dr. Mohit Kumar Jolly received the prestigious Arthur T. Winfree Prize 2024. This Prize honors a theoretician whose research has inspired significant new biology. A venture capitalist and serial entrepreneur, Mr. Anil Kejriwal passed away. He launched his first start-up - Technocrats Paperchem, manufacturing paper chemicals in 1975 at Jamshedpur. In the year 1981, he founded Ramtech, which went on to become one of the leading global companies in personal computers. A passionate technology and investment evangelist, Mr. Kejriwal actively mentored & partook in Start-Up ecosystem from many batches of IITs.
Prof.Asangram Mudali was the Director of the National Institute of Science & Technology. A philanthropist, he was actively involved in providing education to the poor in the State of Odisha. After completing his bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from IITK, he went on to receive his master's degree from University of Houston, USA, in 1987.
Dr. Vikram Narasimhan (MSc5/CHM/1984), Dr. Nalini Murdter (MSc5/CHM/1979) and Dr. Nandini Narayan established Prof. P.T. Narasimhan Fund for Classical Arts. Prof.Narasimhan was a highly distinguished scientist and founding faculty of IIT Kanpur's Chemistry Department. He was also an accomplished flautist in the Carnatic tradition of Indian classical music. Prof. Arvind Mithal (BT/EE/1969) passed away at the age of 77. He was Charles W. and Jennifer C. Johnson Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at MIT, head of the faculty of computer science in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), and a pillar of the MIT community. He was honored with membership of the National Academy of Engineering in 2008 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2012, he became a member of the Indian National Academy of Sciences and fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and received the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award from IEEE in 2012.

Shri Amit Agrawal has been appointed as the CEO of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He is an officer of the 1993 batch IAS from the Chhattisgarh cadre. He has served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Before that he was Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. In Chhattisgarh, he served as the Finance Secretary and the Secretary in charge of the Departments of Commercial Tax and Technical Education in the State Government among other roles.
The Ministry of External Affairs appoints Shri Upender Singh Rawat as the next High Commissioner to Uganda. Shri Rawat is an Indian Foreign Service officer of 1998 batch. He is currently serving as the Ambassador of India to Panama. In his career, he has served in various capacities. He started as the third Secretary at the Embassy of India, Buenos Aires; served in Indian Diplomatic Missions in Slovakia, UK, and Mexico.

He was known for his philanthropy and had instituted Gopal Das Bhandari Memorial Distinguished Teacher Award at IIT Kanpur. He was deeply involved in alumni activities and played a significant role in the construction of the Outreach Building on the IIT Kanpur campus. He was also involved in PanIIT alumni outreach.
Dr. Rathin Datta passed away in Chicago, USA. He was a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kanpur 2010 and recipient of the Director's Gold Medal in 1970. He was a renowned chemical engineer with more than 40 years of experience in developing and commercializing process and product technologies for both established and emerging companies. His career was devoted to renewable resources for energy and chemicals – development of innovative technologies, creating organizations and companies in this field and leading them to commercialization.
Mr. Saurabh Tripathi was appointed as the Leader, Global Financial Institutions Practice at Boston Consulting Group, Mumbai. His expertise lies in banking and financial services and has over 17 years of experience in consulting. He did his bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1996 and was awarded the President's Gold Medal.
Mr. Anup Bagchi (MT/CHE/1977) got appointed as the next MD & CEO of ICICI Pru Life Insurance. Mr. Bagchi is currently serving as Executive Director of ICICI Bank and will take over in June this year. Prof. Deepak Dhar was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan 2023 award by the Govt. of India in the field of Science & Engineering. He is a theoretical physicist and a distinguished professor in the Physics department of IISER Pune.

IITK Distinguished Alumna, Prof. Meenakshi Narain passed away on 01 Jan. 2023. She was a prominent high-energy experimentalist and was deeply involved with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. She did her MSC2 in Physics in 1984 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. She was instrumental in discovering the top quark, the heaviest fundamental particle in 1995, and co-authored/authored over 850 articles in leading physics journals. She was a professor of physics and Chair of the Dept. of Physics at Brown University.
Dr. Deepak Pathak for getting awarded the 2022 Okawa Research Grant. He is one of seven professors in the U.S. to receive the prestigious grant from the Okawa Foundation for Information and Telecommunications. Dr. Pathak's research has focused on making robots adaptable to real-world environments. His work with legged robots has enabled them to maneuver across nearly any #terrain, climb high stairs and clamber over obstacles. He has also demonstrated novel ways to teach robots tasks, including having mobile manipulators learn from watching humans or even YouTube videos.
An esteemed alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Mr. Ajay Dubey and his wife Mrs. Rooma Dubey have contributed USD 2,50,000 for seeding health technology innovations. An MoU was signed between the institute and Mr. Ajay Dubey on 06 Dec. 2022 at IIT Kanpur who generously contributed towards instituting ‘Rooma & Ajay Dubey Healthcare Innovation & Ideation Program’ (HII Program) which aims to seed and nurture innovations in health technology and build an ecosystem and nurture students start-ups in the domain of HealthTech. Our Distinguished alumnus, Prof. K V Subramanian has been named as the Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund. Dr. Subramanian is the former Chief Economic Advisor to the Govt. of India and is a leading expert on economic policy, banking, and corporate governance.
IITK Distinguished alumnus, Dr. Rakesh K. Jain (BT/CHE/1972) gets selected to receive 2022 Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research.
Dr. Jain is being recognized for his pioneering research and breakthrough discoveries on overcoming barriers posed by the tumor microenvironment (TME) which led to the improved delivery and efficacy of anti-cancer medicines. His groundbreaking and innovative research has fundamentally transformed the understanding of tumor biology and directly informed the development and approval of new drug-combinations to treat cancer patients.
The Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research is named in memory of Dr. Albert Szent-Györgyi, NFCR’s co-founder and 1937 Nobel Laureate for his study of vitamin C and cell respiration. The annual Prize honors scientists whose seminal discovery or pioneering body of work has contributed to cancer prevention, diagnosis, or treatment and has had a lasting impact on understanding cancer, holding the promise of improving or saving lives of cancer patients.
Dr. Rakesh K. Jain will be honored at the Szent-Györgyi Prize award ceremony on October 22, 2022, at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Prof. Ashutosh Sharma (BT/CHE/1982) was selected as the President of the Indian National Science Academy in June 2022. He is an Institute Fellow and Distinguished Alumnus of IITK. Prof. Sharma served as the Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. He is a recipient of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award in engineering sciences for his "original pioneering contribution to the understanding of the behavior of thin films and other highly confined nanoscale systems." Prof. Jayathi Murthy (BT/ME/1979) was elected as the President of the Oregon State University, USA, in June 2022. She is the first woman Dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science at UCLA. Prof. Murthy is also a Professor at UCLA’s Mechanical & Aerospace Department. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA; Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
