The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur has made significant progress in the past year, marked by robust donor support, major infrastructure developments, strategic partnerships, and a vibrant calendar of academic and research activities. The school’s foundation and growth are anchored by the generosity of Mr. Rakesh Gangwal, who donated ₹100 crores to establish the medical school at IIT Kanpur. This initiative, formalized through an MoU in April 2022, has transformed the landscape of medical education and research on campus. The school is named in his honor, and the adjoining super-speciality hospital is supported by JK Cement and named after Late Mr. Yadupati Singhania. The Founder’s Circle includes eminent IIT Kanpur alumni and industrialists such as Mr. Muktesh Pant, Dr. Dev Joneja, Mr. Hemant Jalan, and Mr. Anil Bansal, each contributing to the school’s vision and endowments. Additional support comes from leaders like Dr. Deepak Narula (Co-founder), Mr. Vikram Tannan, and families such as the Sutwalas and Parikhs, as well as corporate donors like Opalescent IT Solutions Inc.

Meeting with UP Industrialists

IIT Kanpur hosted an evening dedicated to the introduction of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, and the Yadupati Singhania Super Specialty Hospital to industry leaders and dignitaries from the state of Uttar Pradesh on 15th March 2024. This event aimed at presenting the futuristic initiatives of the School and highlighted IIT Kanpur's ambitious initiatives to redefine healthcare and MedTech innovation in India.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Mr. A.K. Saraogi, President (CA & CRO) of JKCement; Mr. Atul Kapoor, MD, Regency Health; Mr. Neeraj Gupta, Joint MD, MKU Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Raj Kumar Lohia, Chairman, Lohia Group; Mr. Deepak Kothari, Chairman & MD, Kothari Products Ltd., and our esteemed alumnus Mr. Gopal Sutwala, among others. Prof. S. Ganesh, Director, IIT Kanpur, Prof. Sandeep Verma, PIC Gangwal School; and Mr. Kapil Kaul, CEO IIT Kanpur Development Foundation (IITK DF); shed light on the vision, objectives, and notable achievements of the Gangwal School, the event serving as a platform to enhance understanding and nurture the partnerships between IIT Kanpur and stakeholders in various industries.

IIT Kanpur held Bhoomi Pujan for the construction of the Gangwal School of Medical Science and Technology and Yadupati Singhania Super Speciality Hospital in the month of September.

GSMST at IITK signed an MoU with the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The MoU was signed by Prof. Sandeep Verma, Professor-In-Charge, Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, and Shri Ranjan Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh, in the presence of honourable Deputy Chief Minister Shri Brajesh Pathak; Minister of State Parliamentary Affairs, Medical Education, Medical and Health, Family Welfare, Mother and Child Welfare, Shri Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh and Principal Secretary, Shri Partha Sarthi Sensharma, Govt. of UP. Prof. Amitabha Bandyopadhyay and Prof. Nisheeth Srivastava also joined Prof. Sandeep Verma for the event from the Institute side.

Infrastructure Milestones

Construction on the GSMST campus and the Yadupati Singhania Super Speciality Hospital has advanced steadily:

  • Key construction milestones were achieved throughout the year, such as the approval of the fly-ash mix design, and M/s AGS started mobilization at GSMST and the completion of multiple structural slabs and columns.

Events and News

The Uttar Pradesh government announced ₹50 crores in funding, to be disbursed over five years, further strengthening the financial foundation for the hospital’s construction.

GSMST was featured in The Week Magazine (June 2024 edition).

GSMST hosted delegations from the Armed Forces Medical Services and Tata Communications, exploring collaborative opportunities in research and healthcare delivery.

IIT Kanpur signed an MoU with the ICICI Foundation to build a Digital Health Stack that will help improve public healthcare using medical technology, AI-based diagnostics, and better point-of-care services.

GSMST hosted the AIRTF selection meeting for the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to create networks and collaborations in STI and cross-sectoral areas.

A joint online research colloquium was organized on the theme "Exploring Biological and Chemical Strategies to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

As part of the Jalan Distinguished Lecture Series in MedTech Innovation, Gangwal School organized a talk by Prof. Muthuraman Muthuraman, University of Augsburg, Germany.

GSMST organized an exciting talk on "Understanding Cancers!" by Dr. Shabnam Bashir, Senior Consultant Breast & Colorectal Cancer Surgeries, Kashmir, under the aegis of Joneja Colloquium Series in Clinical Medicine on August 1st at 4.30 PM. The talk was organized at the Mehta Family Center for Engineering in Medicine at IIT Kanpur.

IIT Kanpur signed an MoU with IIM Lucknow to offer an academic Postgraduate Joint Degree Program on “Healthcare Management" as part of Gangwal Medical Sciences and Technology. The MoU was signed by Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director IITK and Prof. Archana Shukla, Director, IIM Lucknow. This program will equip students of several disciplines, doctors & medical professionals, with a contemporary blend of business administration with technological healthcare knowledge, positioning them as effective leaders to address complexities of healthcare industry & management.

The Innovations in NeuroTech Workshop was organized on November 21, 2024, by Dr. Arjun Ramakrishnan under the aegis of the Center of Excellence in Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Mental Health. The workshop provided a valuable platform for interdisciplinary collaboration among experts in clinical neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and neuro-engineering.

As part of the Pant Workshop Series on Medical Technology and Future Medicine, the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology (GSMST) organized a conference featuring expert discussions on “Innovative Solutions for Metabolic Health: From Research to Reality.”

The International Research Symposium on “Advancements in Precision Healthcare Robotics and Assistive Technology” was held on November 22–23, 2024.

SPARC Project Symposium on “Point-of-Care Healthcare Devices” and the Pant Workshop Series on Medical Technology & Future Medicine were jointly held from November 25–27, 2024. The events featured in-depth discussions on emerging medical technologies, focusing on scalable, patient-centric innovations.

SPARC Symposium on India–Australia Cooperation in Medical Education and Biomedical Research was held on November 29, 2024, at the Melbourne Global Centre, Connaught Place, New Delhi. The event fostered cross-national collaboration and exchange of ideas in medical training and research.

SMST Flagship Projects were prominently showcased during “IITK Samanvay: Empowering Industry” held on November 29, 2024.

Workshop on “Promotion of Equitable Access to Affordable Healthcare in Uttar Pradesh” was held on January 28, 2025.

In collaboration with the Armed Forces Medical Services, GSMST organized a 6-day capsule course for medical cadets from AFMC Pune.

Several dignitaries visited the GSMST site, including the Director of IIT Kanpur, Dr. Deepak Mohan Narula, Mr. Arvind Singh, HDFC CSR Head, Shri Awanish Awasthi, Shri Manas Mandal, Prof. Anna Ryan, and Mr. Rakesh Gangwal.

The GSMST Project includes Construction of Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur, covers Package 1 and 2 and commenced on 03rd October 2023, with a revised completion date of 03rd June 2026. The project encompasses the SSH, Academic Buildings, Ancillary, and Engineering Yard. Since its inception, significant progress has been achieved in both foundational and superstructure elements, with execution maintaining a strong focus on quality, safety, and adherence to timelines.

In the SSH and Academic Building, most of the key construction activities have advanced considerably. The foundation work is 99% complete, with only minor finishing activities remaining. The superstructure stands at 94%, with the upper floors in the final stages and work above the terrace nearing completion. Blockwork has reached 87%, with mid-level floors progressing and lower floors almost complete. Plaster work has achieved 61%, mainly on the lower floors, with a planned ramp-up in resources. Internal waterproofing is 33% done,particularly in wet areas and shafts. Flooring work has commenced in the common areas and IPD, with an overall progress of 20%.

On the services side, electrical conduiting (surface) has reached 88%, progressing alongside blockwork up to the terrace level. Chamber and manhole work on the grade slab is 70% complete, a critical part of utility setup. Cable tray installation stands at 87%, with material readiness ensuring continuity. Sprinkler piping installation has reached 75%, actively progressing in shafts and corridors, while PVC conduit work is 86% complete, mainly in service areas. PIR ducting, essential for HVAC systems, is at 42%, with AHU floor levels under execution. In the Ancillary and Engineering Yard, the foundation work has progressed to 64%, with structural excavation and PCC work ongoing. Columns up to the plinth beam bottom have achieved 25% completion, and backfilling of earth stands at 11%, with continuous work in progress.

Overall, the GSMST Project is advancing steadily in accordance with the revised schedule. With early-stage civil activities nearing completion, the project focus is now shifting toward services, MEP installations, and interior works. Sustained momentum, effective coordination, and strong stakeholder collaboration are ensuring that the project remains on track for its target completion date of 03rd June 2026.
