A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump implanted in patients with weakened hearts to support the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart to pump blood more effectively.

A "Make in India" Device, developed by IIT Kanpur, with superior performance and advanced and improved technology, to minimise adverse events in patients and enhance their quality-of-life post -implantation

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are life-saving mechanical pumps designed for people with severe heart failure, when the heart can no longer keep blood moving through the body on its own. By taking over much of the heart’s pumping work, LVADs restore healthy blood flow and can dramatically reduce the debilitating symptoms of heart failure. The device is implanted by an open-chest surgery under general anaesthesia. Once in place, the pump is powered and controlled by equipment worn outside the body, connected through a small cable that passes through the abdomen. This system allows the device to support the heart and sustain vital circulation continuously.

The device will support patients suffering from advanced heart failure or congestive heart failure (CHF), Stage D, or end-stage heart failure. In the future, the advanced mock circulation loop can be used for other cardiovascular support. The device will serve both as the bridge to transplantation and as destination therapy. Initiated in May 2022, the project brings together a multidisciplinary team from academia and hospitals to deliver an innovative, sustainable solution to India’s growing burden of heart failure.
