Born on September 11, 1937, in Nizampur Majra, Sonepat district, Haryana, Prof. Gehlawat's journey from a modest village to the forefront of chemical engineering epitomizes dedication and excellence. He earned his B.Chem. Engg. in 1962, M.Tech. in 1965, and Ph.D. in 1969 from the Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT), Bombay University.
His professional career commenced in the chemical industry, where he held pivotal roles, including R&D Manager at Gharda Chemicals Ltd. and Director at Universal Starch-Chem Ltd. In 1975, he transitioned to academia, joining the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur as an Assistant Professor. By 1977, he became a full Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. His research focused on process development for agro-based materials, significantly advancing the field.
Prof. Gehlawat's contributions were recognized with numerous accolades:
- The NOCIL Award in 1983 by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers for excellence in process plant design.
- The Chemical Engineering Award in 1997 by the Institution of Engineers India for innovative process development.
