Dr. Shishpal Rawat and his wife, Mrs. Hemangi D. Rawat, generously contributed to establish the IIT Kanpur Swastibhavatu Lecture Series Supported by Rawat Family Trust in the Kotak School of Sustainability at IIT Kanpur. This Lecture Series in Sustainability is aimed at fostering thought leadership, innovative solutions, and interdisciplinary dialogue in this critical area.
Prof. Ramaswamy spoke on "Understanding and Predictions of Climate Extremes for Sustainability", an eminent atmospheric scientist and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, discussed the Earth's energy imbalance driven by greenhouse gas emissions and land surface changes. The talk explored how these factors affect global climate systems- impacting temperature, precipitation, and sea level- and how advanced Earth System models and observations can guide sustainable solutions to address climate-related challenges.
Prof. Thalappil Pradeep spoke on "Water, Droplets, and Ice: Examples of Science for Sustainability" in the inaugural lecture. Professor Pradeep discussed his revolutionary AMRIT technology, which provides arsenic-, iron-, and uranium-free water to 1.3 million people daily. His research also covered advancements in contaminant sensing and the science of water droplets and ice, highlighting their potential to address global water sustainability challenges. He is an institute professor at IIT Madras, known for his pioneering work in water purification and nanotechnology.
