Prof. Ashoke Sen Endowment

Prof. Ashoke Sen is a renowned Indian theoretical physicist and currently serves as a faculty member and ICTS-Infosys Madhava Chair Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He is known for his pioneering contributions to string theory, including S-duality and tachyon condensation. He is a recipient of the Fundamental Physics Prize and the Padma Bhushan, among several other prestigious awards.

Prof. Sen has generously contributed to the modernization of the Seminar Room in the Department of Physics, dedicating it in honor of Prof. Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri, a distinguished Indian theoretical physicist. Prof. Raychaudhuri made significant contributions to General Relativity and, during his tenure at Presidency College, Calcutta University, mentored and inspired generations of eminent Indian physicists, including Prof. Sen.

The Ashok Sen Endowment Fund continues to play a vital role in upgrading and maintenance of the Prof. Anmol Kumar Raychaudhuri Seminar Hall at the Department of Physics. In the academic year 2024-25, the fund was utilized to upgrade the Seminar Hall, which remains a central venue for seminars (both in physical and hybrid modes), colloquiums, group discussions, and various departmental activities.

Significant improvements were made during this period, including the installation of a comprehensive audio-visual system to support modern presentation and conferencing needs and recording the lectures. Additionally, the chairs in the seminar hall were repaired and dry-cleaned, improving both functionality and aesthetics. These upgrades have greatly enhanced the usability and comfort of the facility, and the fund has proven invaluable in facilitating these much-needed improvements.
