Prof. Prakash Panangaden is a renowned computer scientist whose pioneering research has significantly advanced the foundations of theoretical computer science, programming language semantics, logic, and probabilistic systems. He is currently an Honorary Professor in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, UK.
Prof. Panangaden graduated with an M.Sc. in Physics from IIT Kanpur in 1975. He earned an M.S. in Physics from the University of Chicago, USA, in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA, in 1980. Subsequently, he transitioned to computer science, obtaining an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Utah, USA, in 1985.
With a research career spanning computer science, mathematics, and physics, Prof. Panangaden is internationally recognized for his pioneering work across these fields. He has made significant advances in the semantics and logic of probabilistic computation and developed mathematical methods for modelling and analysing systems with continuous state spaces. His work has found wide applications in probabilistic modelling, quantitative logic, and the mathematical foundations of machine learning.
His work has also advanced the understanding of Markov processes, bisimulation, metrics, programming language semantics, and logics for probabilistic systems. Together with his collaborators, he proved a landmark theorem connecting the behavioural equivalence of continuous-state processes with their logical properties. More recently, he has developed quantitative extensions of equational logic and methods for reasoning about approximate equality.
Beyond probabilistic systems, Prof. Panangaden has made important contributions to quantum information theory, concurrent programming semantics, modal logic, and category theory. He has also shown how the topology of globally hyperbolic spacetimes can be reconstructed from their causal structure. In quantum information theory, he developed a formal calculus for reasoning about measurement-based computation, which has had a significant impact on the analysis of cryptographic protocols.
Throughout his distinguished career, Prof. Panangaden has been a faculty member at Cornell University, Queen's University, and McGill University. From 2018 to 2024, he was a core member of the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA). In recognition of his important contributions to theoretical computer science, the University of Oxford organized a symposium in his honour in 2014.
Apart from his research, Prof. Panangaden has served on several leading research funding and evaluation bodies, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), FCAR, and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). He is also the author of Labelled Markov Processes (2009) and co-author of Implementing Mathematics with the Nuprl Proof Development System (1986).
