Prof. V. Chandrasekhar is a distinguished chemist recognised for his contributions to inorganic and organometallic chemistry and molecular materials. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, in 1982, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA.
He joined the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1987 and served the Institute until his superannuation in November 2023. During his tenure, he served as Head of the Department of Chemistry from 2008 to 2010 and Dean of Faculty Affairs from 2011 to 2012. He subsequently held senior academic and leadership positions at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad, and the National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar.
His research interests span molecular materials, including molecular magnets, main-group organometallic chemistry, inorganic rings and polymers, and polynuclear metal assemblies. His work also explores the design and properties of metal complexes, their catalytic applications, and the development of materials with distinctive magnetic and photophysical properties.
Prof. Chandrasekhar has received several prestigious national and international honours, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Chemical Sciences (2003), the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany (2003), the Chemical Research Society of India Medal (2002), and the Homi Bhabha Fellowship (1999-2000). He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences, India, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He has also contributed to the scientific community through editorial roles, including his association with Organometallics and his role as Associate Editor of Dalton Transactions.
