Overview:

The UG courses (ME261 / ME361) introduce students to primary and secondary manufacturing processes, including casting, joining, bulk deformation, additive manufacturing, conventional and non-conventional machining, and measurement techniques. It covers process classification, design aspects, working of machines, mechanistic analysis, process physics and defects formed during the process.

Equipment
  • Die Casting Setup: Bottom pouring type aluminium die casting machine, for sample preparation – VOLTZ Sander, micro-balance (AFCOSET), polishing equipment (double disk single drive Bainpol Metco), and Nikon LV100D microscope for characterization.
  • Welding Setup: Fronius TransSteel 3000 Pulse, CO2 and argon gas cylinders for shielding, and TC-08 data logger.
  • Hydraulic Press Setup: USB microscope, load cell, LabVIEW software, NI DAQ card, vernier caliper, proving ring, chop saw, and blank-making die-punch for sample sheet (disk) cutting.
  • Multi Gating Channel Flow during Mold Filling Setup: Complete setup with accessories.
  • 3D Printing machine: FDM 3D printing machines, vernier calipers, 3D CAD software, and Ultimaker Cura 5.0.
  • CNC Lathe Setup: LabVIEW software, Three-component piezo-crystal type dynamometer (Kistler), NI DAQ card, micro-balance, Dino-Lite USB microscope, and vernier caliper.
  • EDM Setup: Electronica ZNC EDM machine, for sample/tool preparation - HMT radial drill machine, HMT LB-17 lathe and Praga surface grinding machine, micro-balance, Dino-Lite USB microscope, micrometer, and stopwatch.
  • Milling Setup: Multi-component dynamometer (Kistler), LabVIEW software, NI DAQ card, Dino-Lite USB microscope, vernier calipers, HMT LB-17 lathe, Praga surface grinding machine for sample/tool preparation, microbalance, and ELGI air compressor with dryer for dry and compressed air.
  • Metrology Setup: 3D Coordinate Measuring Machine (Accurate Spectra 5.6.4) and Kaeser air dryer, ELGI air compressor for dry and compressed air.

Experiments:
  1. To cast Aluminium in a metal mould. To measure temperature as the molten Aluminium solidifies, evaluate cooling curves, and prepare samples from the cast piece to characterize their microstructure.
  2. To study and observe the welding techniques through practice (MMAW and MIG). To make a Butt-Joint and measure the temperature through TC-08 Data Logger, and study the effect on Metal Deposition Rate by varying torch speed in MIG Welding.
  3. To draw a cup by cup drawing process and measure forming forces, and linear, area and volumetric strains.
  4. To observe mold filling behaviour using the Multi Gating Channel Flow Experiment
  5. To fabricate a 3D object using the fused deposition additive manufacturing process and to measure dimensions using a vernier caliper.
  6. To measure cutting forces in turning machining operation and to identify cutting force coefficients, estimate cutting force coefficient from the estimated chip thickness ratio, and study influence of cutting speed on cutting forces.
  7. To study and observe the EDM machining technique. To determine material removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR) during machining of EN8 steel.
  8. To mechanistic identification of cutting force coefficients in the Milling operation.
  9. To measure features and part dimensions of the part fabricated through additive manufacturing, and to demonstrate measuring of other complex parts using the coordinate measuring machine (CMM).
