Overview:
The Materials Testing Laboratory, located on the Undergraduate Laboratory Complex, serves as an important instructional facility for undergraduate students in Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The laboratory is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts taught in their materials-related courses and their real-world engineering applications. At present, the laboratory supports experiments associated with the courses ME222 (Nature and properties of materials), ME683 (Techniques in non-destructive evaluation), and ME723 (Wave propagation in solids) providing students with practical exposure to the behavior and characterization of engineering materials. The Laboratory, offered under Course Code ME333 (Experiments in Mechanical Engineering-I), comprises a series of structured experiments designed to provide students with hands-on experience in evaluating the mechanical properties of engineering materials. The experiments cover properties such as strength, hardness, ductility, fatigue life, elastic modulus, shear modulus, and surface characteristics of various materials, including mild steel, aluminium, copper, brass, polymers, elastomers, and thin-film specimens. The facility is equipped with a wide range of testing and characterization instruments including universal testing machine, micro vickers hardness tester, digital brinell hardness tester, rotating cantilever fatigue testing machine, metallography station, contact angle meter, ellipsometer, tear resistance tester. These instruments enable experimental studies related to tensile testing, fatigue analysis, hardness measurement, metallographic examination, wettability assessment, surface energy evaluation, and thin film characterization. The experiments conducted in the laboratory help students understand concepts such as stress-strain behavior, S-N curve generation, material failure mechanisms, surface properties, microstructural analysis, and estimation of elastic constants.
