M.Tech UAS
M.Tech. – Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Engineering
The M.Tech. program in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Engineering is two years (4 semesters) program with typically the first year dedicated to course work and the second year on research leading to a thesis.
A student admitted to the M.Tech. program in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering is associated with one of the two specializations. These include:
Two interdisciplinary specializations (IDS):
- Aeromechanics and Design
- Autonomy
The details of the areas encompassed by each of these IDS is as follows:
There are certain departmental and specialization specific courses in which a student must secure a passing grade to successfully complete the degree. For details, please refer to the attached course template UAS MTech Course Template.
Eligibility
Candidates with B.E./B.Tech. degree in Aerospace / Aeronautical, Mechanical, Automobile, Production, Civil, Naval Architecture, Textile Engineering, Electrical, Electronics / Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation, Mechatronics; four year BS degree in Physics, Mathematics or MSc degree in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering Physics with valid GATE score can apply to the M.Tech. program. For details, please refer to the attached table Eligibility-UAS.pdf
Admissions
Admission to M. Tech. Program is made once a year in July. Announcement for admission to the program is typically made after the GATE exam. Please check the institute website (https://iitk.ac.in) for the announcement.
During application every candidate has to mention the choice of specializations out of the 2 IDS in order of preference. The applicants from Electronics (EE, ECE etc.), are encouraged to apply to Autonomy and those from Maths and Physics background are encouraged to apply to Aeromechanics and Design as these areas would align with their current background.
The Department specific procedures for admission to the M. Tech. program are as follows:
Non-sponsored candidates are required to appear in a written test based on mathematics and basic subjects related to Undergraduate Engineering Program. Typically the candidates are required to answer five questions that include two compulsory mathematics questions and any three out of eight subject questions.
Sponsored (By Industry / Govt. Labs) M.Tech Candidates may be asked to appear for a short written test in mathematics before the interview.
Typically the details of the department specific procedure are shared with the applicants over email or announced on our website after the advertisement for admissions is made.
Refer to https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pg-manual for more details about the rules and regulations.
Conversion of Program from M.Tech./MS(R) to Ph.D.
Refer to the criteria given below item 4.6 in PG Manual ( https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pg-manual ).
Additionally the following criteria must be satisfied by the student at the time of application (Faculty meeting minutes of 6th Jan 2022):
- Complete his/her program course credit requirement, which is 36 for MS(R) and 72 for M.Tech.
- A CPI of 8.5 or above for MS(R) and 8.0 or above for M.Tech.

Welcome Message
The Aerospace Engineering Department is more than 40 years old. Till 1991, it was known as Aeronautical Engineering Department. The name change was accompanied by addition of topics relating to spacecraft in the UG curriculum; some members of the faculty had been conducting research and guiding PG students in this area even before the formal alteration of the name in 1991. In matters of teaching, research & development, the department has always tried to strike a balance between hardware development and experiments on one hand...
